War Witch (2012)

Makes the Heart Crumble

When my sisters were twelve they were in seventh grade, still watching cartoons, and worried about whether or not their favorite pair of pants were clean. What a world of difference between our lower middle class suburban life and that of Komona (Rachel Mwanza), the main character of "War Witch."

"War Witch" is a foreign film that conjures up visceral feelings of sadness and despair like "Blood Diamond," "Hotel Rwanda," "Sometimes in April," and "Shake Hands with the Devil." The main character is a twelve-year-old girl named Komona. In the very beginning she was forced to gun down her parents and become a child soldier. Her statistical prospects for survival were extremely low, yet against all odds she survived a vicious firefight. After that she was known as "The Witch" which earned her a high rank amongst the rebels. You just hold your breath in angst waiting to see what misfortunes will befall Komona.

I've said this time and time again: these types of movies are so difficult to watch, but I almost feel like they're necessary. We see first world problems all the time being whined about on social media and it blinds us to the fact that there are people out there, outside our borders, who are living in hell. "War Witch" gives you a glimpse of that hell from the eyes of a girl forced to grow up way too soon.
