two - two faces
21 January 2022
Famous actress Jessica Wells (Mary Astor) is making a comeback with help from her stage actor brother Damon Wells (Edward G. Robinson). It's going well until her despicable, low-life criminal, presumed-dead husband Stanley Vance (Louis Calhern) unexpectedly shows up. She robotically follows him and leaves her producer boyfriend Ben Weston behind.

More than anything, it's Jessica who has two faces. I can't really buy her robotic acting. Her character should be scared. Mary Astor is almost acting in a trance and I wonder if it's some form of hypnosis. It's an odd acting choice. EGR's second face looks very different and it's reasonable to have Vance miss the deception. It's a fine murder drama.
