Donnie Brasco (1997)
5/10
Not simply a shoot them up gangster movie with gratuitous graphical content. A film with depth and moral questions but carried by tension and enjoyable characters

I'm not the biggest fan of gangster type movies. They tend to be full of cliche and stereotype in my opinion and rely on graphic content for entertainment and therefore are often thin of depth. But this was one of the better films of such ilk that I have seen. It presents a really interesting relationship and moral questions about who is right and wrong and when justice is necessary and to what extent etc. Its not just your bad guys shooting loads of s**t and the cops on their tails. Al Pacino's character was especially endearing and memorable. Johnny Depp did a good job as the somewhat conflicted cop. It perhaps isn't anything that we haven't seen before but it does do the crime genre with well rounded characters and sufficient depth well.
