Search of fictional poets finds romance
30 January 2022
"Possession" is a somewhat interesting drama and mystery based on a 1990 novel of the same title by British author A. S. Byatt. I have no idea how closely the film follows the book, but it's well acted by Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart in the leads.

The story takes place in England and involves research into two fictional English poets of the past. British researcher Maud Bailey (Paltrow) and American researcher Roland Michell (Eckhart) race to see which one can reveal a true story about the historical poets. They were supposed to be antagonists, but the modern researchers suspect it was a cover for their romance.

In the process, Bailey and Michell are antagonists who also fall for each other. It's a fairly good story, with a good cast all around. Audiences liked it much more than the critics, but it didn't generate enough box office appeal to even cover half its budget.
