a little awkward
13 February 2022
It's an adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel. Jim Hawkins (Jackie Cooper) and his mother run the tavern Admiral Benbow. Billy Bones (Lionel Barrymore) drunkenly claims to have a treasure. He dies and leaves behind a map. Jim and a group set up an expedition to find the treasure. The one-legged Long John Silver (Wallace Beery) joins the group as a cook. Unbeknownst to them, Silver has been tracking the treasure himself with his dastardly cohorts.

This is headlined by child-star Jackie Cooper and comedic actor Wallace Beery. I don't actually know the book. Of course, this is a classic but I don't actually know these characters. It seems like Long John Silver is a villain like Captain Hook. I don't see the connection between him and Jim. It's a little awkward to have Jim being so nice towards him. Otherwise, this is a fine pirate movie.
