Ferdinand (2017)
7/10
Sweet and unexpected

Its gentler nature may get in the way of playing it a bit too safe at times, but ultimately Ferdinand is a rather sweet and charming little animated flick- even if it can be a bit familiar. I have to be honest and say I didn't expect to like this film at all, though to be fair all I knew is that John Cena played a bull and that was about it. Props to John Cena for easily being the best part of this movie, he gives so much character and heart to the character of Ferdinand and really allows the audience to grow and empathize with the film and its characters. The animation style isn't anything too grand, I wasn't fond of the human characters, but the bulls and other animals were fun to watch on screen. It has some predictable and more formulaic moments, you can see where the film is gonna go pretty much from the beginning, but it still feels validated because of its execution. There are a few cringey moments here and there too, and other parts definitely feels a bit too average for a story about a kindhearted bull. It isn't as risk taking as other films in its genre, year, or parent company- but it does manage to harness its charm into something that's both entertaining and surprisingly meaningful. In the end, Ferdinand may not be a home run but it is a fun and sweet effort and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing this character again sometime on the big screen.

My Rating: 6.7/10.
