Ricky Gervais: SuperNature (2022 TV Special)
6/10
Worth a watch but not his best work
31 May 2022
The only reason I still use Netflix these days is to watch stand up. Ricky gervais... a lot of people don't like him, and it's for the same reasons that I do like him. I like dark humor and I know that humors subjective so I get that, I just don't understand why you'd still bother yourself to go and watch, even pay. And he addresses the sensitivity issue in the show. I like it a slightly more than his previous special, and a lot of people complained about how distasteful Supernature is so I was excited to see it. It feels like he goes in the same route as Humanity; his Twitter jokes and oh I'm rich material. I thought "Humanity" fluctuated a bit, he'd say something that makes me laugh out loud and I'd wait a couple minutes for the next one, while this was more consistent. I don't think it's his best work but I still liked it. My complaint is the reaction; you watch stand up because you want a laugh but you can see a lot of the audience reactions are more like applauds and a lot of comedians have been chasing that not the actual laughs. Mostly like 'oh yeah, to hell with woke culture' and the crowd reacts.

Of course he still sticks in some jokes while he's at it. I think he started off really strong but at some point just drops off and after that isn't as memorable especially if you watched his previous work. Not exactly funny, just topics you can agree with or "edgy" and I suspect that's where the really high ratings and reviews are coming from. People happy he's calling out cancel culture and woke comedy.

I like dark humor, I don't think there should be rules to comedy. Some people don't like it and that's fine, go find a comedian you like if that's the case and stick to them instead of spending time listening to someone or something you don't like. Why do that to yourself?🤷‍♂️

Now, I always like to mention Adrienne Iapalucci when talking dark humor since there aren't many female comedians who do it and still funny, most are either just vulgar or offensive. She features on Netflix's "The Degenerates" and it's worth a watch if you like dark satire and it's only a few minutes.
