The British can certainly DO period pieces and apart from the scenery, costumes and interior details, this drama doesn't hold up to their usual high standard. The acting is fine, but the predictable storyline and light-weight characters didn't keep me riveted or even interested in their fate. It just had no depth to either the individuals or their lives. The look and feel of the film just didn't capture my imagination, despite the attractive main actors. There are better and more authentic movies and mini-series from this time period that will satisfy you more than this one. It's a bit like vanilla ice cream. Ok for some but lacks a bit of 'punch'.
