Murder, She Wrote: South by Southwest
14 October 2022
After the series Murder, She Wrote finished. It returned for a series of television movies.

With a title of South by Southwest. It is a lukewarm homage to Hitchcock's North by Northwest.

Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) is taking a train ride to El Paso where she is to give a speech at a lecture on writing mystery stories.

In the dining cart she meets Sarah (Mel Harris) who suddenly disappears. Later Jessica is attacked when she goes snooping at Sarah's train compartment.

Only to be saved by an investigative journalist who later dies. When Jessica finds Sarah, she claims to being pursued as she witnessed someone being killed.

Lansbury settles effortly into Jessica Fletcher's shoes. It was only a year since the series finished.

The extended length has a large cast of characters and a lot of suspects. This includes various FBI agents who all seem to get in the way as the Mcguffin is stolen nuclear codes.

There is a homage not only to Hitchcock thrillers but a police chase that mimicked the OJ Simpson chase scene.

A lighthearted crime drama. It stands as a tribute to Angela Lansbury. She did a lot to ensure that Murder, She Wrote stood true for her generosity and beliefs.

There were always roles for stars from yesteryear so they can get a screen credit, payment and continued health insurance coverage. Positive screen treatment of minority groups. Black actors were likely to be law enforcement instead of villains.
