A fearless performance from Dassler
14 October 2022
The Golden Glove isn't a movie that would necessarily fall in the good category (or the good taste category). To me, it felt pretty inconsistent with where it wanted to go or how it wanted to present itself as a story, the beginning title sequence was very random and jarring, and for many viewers, it's not an easy watch. It's not only disturbing because of the misogynistic content and violence, but as you probably already know, it's very disgusting. However, it's very easy for me to say that Jonas Dassler deserves high praises for his performance as Fritz Honka. Any other handsome, 23 year old actor or their agent would balk at the idea of accepting this type of role, but what Dassler does here is nothing short of fearless. He takes a combo meal of all the risky things a young actor could possibly do: He's playing a serial killer, he's obligated to film rape scenes, he's going full frontal, and he's wearing a mound of makeup that took 3 hours to apply. On top of that, the movie didn't receive the best reviews either. That takes a huge amount of dedication and a next level of skill.
