Don't let the critics fool you, this is Sinatra's best film.

What a profound film, a religious experience. On my first viewing it was perfect. The movie is a about a serial killer and also about the lead actor's(Sinatra) personal demons in the movie.

Sinatra plays Detective Edward Delaney, who takes up the last case of his career, which involves a series of brutal murders. As he is about to get closer to the killer, his wife gets diagnosed with a serious illness. This then is the brief plot of the film.

Actress Faye Dunaway has a very small role in the film as does actor Joe Spinell. The rest of the cast is top quality with the likes of Anthony Zerbe, David Dukes, James Whitmore, Martin Gabel, George Coe and Brenda Vaccaro.

Director Brian G. Hutton is a legend with films like: Where Eagles Dare 1968, Kelly's Heroes 1970 and High Road to China 1983. His direction in this film is sublime and effortless. The film also has good background music by Gordon Jenkins.

It is worth noting that this film though shot in the modern 1980's still retains the element of 50's-60's noir. I think this is due to the fact that Sinatra is tailor made for films of this genre. Nevertheless there is never a dull moment in the film and the script is just wonderful in keeping the film going right till the climax that you will never be able to guess.

Verdict: thoroughly recommended. If you are new to Frank Sinatra then I think this movie would be the best.
