Review of Cirkus

Cirkus (2022)
6/10
Cirkus doesn't have enough humour in it to be called a comedy film.

Rohit Shetty is known to make successful movies with below par scripts, in fact certain films of his have been made with so little effort that if given a chance I would have rated them 0 on IMDB. Cirkus is not too different from any of his previous offerings, as far as quality of screenplay is concerned, but this one did not work at the box office and is being trashed by every single critic. I do agree that 'Cirkus' is not even close to being called a good film but the amount of hate coming its way is completely beyond my understanding. People are criticizing the movie for its lack of humour, dull screenplay, absence of logic and bad acting, but surprisingly had no complaints from the previous offerings of Rohit Shetty, even though all of them suffered from the same issues!

Searching for logic in a Rohit Shetty film is as pointless as Jon Snow in the final season of Game of Thrones; these films are watched just to have a rollicking time, where you forget all your worries for a couple of hours, but surprisingly Cirkus began on a rather subdued note, which was quite unusual for a comedy film. If it was done to reflect the slow moving life of the time the movie was set in, 1960's, then I guess the director should have taken some inspiration from Padosan (1968), because the pacing of that film would put to shame even the comedy films being made today.

Cirkus is not entirely humorless, there are moments that are genuinely funny and made me laugh quite a bit, but the majority of the film is quite dull and boring, something that you do not expect from a film that calls itself a comedy. The climax of a film is where the action hits the roof, as per it's genre, but unfortunately 'Cirkus' went completely flat towards the end, which was quite disappointing. In a comedy film with the lead character having a double role, you expect things to go crazy when the two brothers finally come face to face, but sadly Cirkus suffers from a power cut towards the end and crawls through the final few moments with an extremely uninspired and lackluster screenplay.

Cirkus has a huge ensemble of actors, with Siddharth Jadhav and Sanjay Mishra being the stand-out performers. The funniest scenes of the film are the ones that involve Sanjay Mishra and Siddharth Jadhav. Varun Sharma did not have much to do in the film, and quite frankly I was happy with the decision because Varun has no range as an actor, he always ends up playing the same character that he has been playing since Fukrey (2013). Ranveer Singh's character in the film is a complete contrast from his real life persona, but it was written so poorly that it failed to make any kind of impact. The lead actresses did not have much to do in the film apart from looking pretty, especially Jacqueline Fernandez, who looked extremely gorgeous.

The music of the film is quite forgettable. 'Current Laga' song is good but the rest of them are as dull as the screenplay of the film. Although this wasn't the first time a Rohit Shetty film had background visuals that looked like a painting, but in 'Cirkus' it was a bit overdone. The visual effects of the film were quite good though.

The message that 'Cirkus' tries to deliver is quite good, but the movie falters miserably in it's actual job, that is to make us laugh, rendering everything else quite meaningless.
