Cobra Woman (1944)

"Abdicate?! It's a wild dream of her decaying brain!"

Separated twin sisters are reunited in the Tropics after being apart for years: one is an innocent lass about to be married, the other a ruthless princess who rules over Cobra Island. Their grandmother the Queen wants the good twin--the rightful first born--to replace the bad one; a noble plan, except that the girl's sturdy fiancé has sailed to the island looking for her (he just wants to get married!). Luscious Technicolor production by Universal belies tatty trimmings (such as a menacing cobra which becomes a ridiculous-looking puppet in long shot). Maria Montez does a good job in her dual role as dreamy Tollea and evil Naja (whose eyes glitter with power). Naja's fanny-shaking snake dance is the height of camp, but one can almost rest in assurance the filmmakers knew what they were doing and were likely laughing themselves. The picture is silly but also silly-fun, and good matinée entertainment. **1/2 from ****
