Having seen the musical on stage first, I was surprised how faithful it was to this original film version. Instead of songs like "You Can't Stop the Beat" and "Good Morning Baltimore" we get lots of 60s classics. It's an interesting mix of scene after scene of teens dancing with a strong message on race inequality. Ricki Lake is very good as Tracy. I loved seeing Josh Charles in a small early role, even before Dead Poets Society. We even get Sonny Bono as a racist dad. This movie gets a little weird in the last act, but for most of it it's a lot of fun. It's worth it just to see Jerry Stiller dancing.
