Rescue Me started great. Interesting story, good group of characters...but the show gets repetitive real quick.
The writing is same old same old episode after episode. The female characters are all off. You can tell there were no female writers in the room.
Tommy is a drunk (which gets tired) but then recovers and fights the urge to drink (which also gets tiring), and is not a overly really nice guy (kinda commits a sex crime against wife that seems to be cool).
Mike and Sean are dumb. We get it...but after a while it is beyond realistic how dumb they are.
Lieutenant is probably the best character and when it comes to Tommy's family, again it is over the top how screwed up they are. To the point where it takes away from the show.
I made it to the end of season 4 before giving up...hope you make it further.
