Almost Paradise: A Fisherfolk Tale (2023)
Season 2, Episode 3
5/10
Cliche, cookie cutter plotting

I really like the first season of the show despite the fact I didn't do enough with actual Filipino culture. I see them using more Filipino actors this season. But I still think they are unnecessarily glossing over some of the realities of Filipino life. There's a lot of poverty and a lot of struggle for Filipinos. They make it seem much more like life in the grand Caymans than life in the Philippines. But what really bothers me is that every episode this season is nothing we have never seen before. This episode was Romeo and Juliet. The only saving grace was there were some really good humor with Alex. But I'm very disappointed with the plotting so far this season. I appreciate the value of a show set in the Philippines very much and the money brings to the local culture is huge. But I hope they can come up with a more original set of plots to set there and make more use of actual local, custom and reality. Christian Kane deserves better. He's a highly compelling actor, and there are some decent supporting actors here too. But so far the writing is really letting us down season two. If it doesn't improve I'm not sure they'll be a season three.
