Shockproof (1949)
6/10
Can a femme fatale be on the straight and narrow after jail? Does she have icy blood or a heart of gold? A solid flick centred on the femme fatale herself - and her motives.

Parole officer, Griff, (Wilde) does his best to get Jenny (Knight) to stay on the right side of the law with a new job and a new home; however, her criminally-connected boyfriend waited for her for 5 years - so a sense of loyalty and a toxic attraction both chain her to her old life. This movie centres on her trials and tribulations as she struggles with her identity and changing feelings - but she is also accustomed to deceiving people and manipulating them - to the point where she seems to be even lying to herself, or not knowing if she's lying or not. Along the way, there are plot twists, a flashback, and reversals that take the movie places I wasn't expecting. Patricia Knight plays the perfect femme fatale, and we really see into her life and her mind as she deals with her conflicting emotions - it's her story but of course the men in her life are pulled in by her centrifugal force that inevitably leads to some unsavoury events. Very pacy, well-written in a more-than-serviceable way, and with some very nice touches here and there. A well-spent 80 mins of your time.
