don't particularly like Richard
16 August 2023
It's early 20th century in a small New England town. Richard Miller (Eric Linden) is a know-it-all young man set to go to Yale. He is dating local girl Muriel McComber (Cecilia Parker). His father is newspaper editor Nat Miller (Lionel Barrymore). He has three siblings; older brother Arthur, sister Mildred, and younger brother Tommy (Mickey Rooney). Uncle Sid Miller (Wallace Beery) is pursuing Lily (Aline MacMahon).

Richard is a self-satisfied know-it-all. I don't particularly like him, or his arrogance, or his personality, or his mannerism, or his treatment of Muriel. This is trying to be family friendly small town drama. With more foresight, they would have made Tommy the lead character. The movie is a bunch of episodic stories with these characters. It's old Americana. I wish I like Richard more.
