Moss Rose (1947)
7/10
Pretty good but it kind of unravels at the end.

"Moss Rose" was a film that lost money at the box office. Considering it starred the very bankable Victor Mature, this is surprising.

The film is a very odd murder mystery. It is set in the late 19th century and it's told from the point of view of Belle (Peggy Cummins). Her friend is killed and she thinks she knows who did it. However, instead of turning Michael (Victor Mature) to the police, she approaches him with a strange type of blackmail. She agrees not to tell anyone what she suspected and saw IF Michael takes her to his manor home and treats her like a lady for several weeks! It seems that Belle is a poor woman and has always dreamed of being a lady...a definite problem in class-conscious England during that era. What's next? See the film.

The story is interesting and I enjoyed the movie...though I must admit that the ending was a bit of a disappointment. The killer really hammed up the final scene...and I think you just need to see it to see what I mean. But the rest of the film is handled well (apart from Cummins' mousy performance) and is still well worth seeing.
