Review of Spies

Spies (1928)
6/10
The grandaddy of spy films
3 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This one is for when you're feeling in an adventurous mood: it's at times confusing (according to a making-of doc, some material was cut before release), exceedingly slow and way overlong, but also often inventively, innovatively directed by Fritz Lang (including: quick flashbacks, numbers flashing across the screen, some incredible camera angles, a photo coming to life, etc.). It also introduces lots of spy paraphernalia that spy films have been using until today (cyanide pills, invisible ink, micro-cameras, etc.). The 1st half is not exactly action-packed, but the 2nd does have its thrills and rewards. Rudolf Klein-Rogge cuts a fantastic figure as the super-villain; Gerda Maurus looks strong & sexy, though her turning nice a little too easily robs her of her considerable femme fatale potential. **1/2 out of 4.
