Romance On The High Seas (1948) : Brief Review -

No Magic, but it's Magic! A crazy rom-com of cross-connection and chaotic ambiance that advanced my idea of "Libeled Lady" (1936). If I see Michael Curtiz's name in the credits, I am assured that even in the worst case, the movie will be a good watch. This man hardly disappointed me whenever I saw any of his popular and high-rated films. Curtiz's cinema has left a huge mark, and many filmmakers have been influenced by his work. Many Curtiz films have been remade, adopted, and tweaked, and they all must have thanked this man for sure. Curtiz's Romance on the High Seas has been adopted in India with "Manmadan Ambu" (2010), but before that, it influenced the Bollywood comedy "Hadh Kar Di Aapne" (2000). Imagine that this movie was made in the 1940s, and we had to copy the idea after 5 or 6 decades. Why so behind? I remember watching "Libeled Lady" (1936), which introduced me to this idea of cross-connection and misunderstood personalities in a love triangle/quartet. Marx Bros. Also had a crazy rom-com (COM must be bold) like this, but Curtiz added two of the best romantic fascinations here: voyage and music. As one of the dialogues says, "Rio seems like Paris," one has to agree why such locations are needed to establish a romantic notion. Moreover, music adds more to your fascinating experience, as does how lovely Doris Day looks throughout the film. The storyline is what I call a blockbuster rom-com entertainer. Now that's four adjectives together for one movie, so it's a big compliment. The performances of Jack Carson, Janis Paige, Don DeFore, Doris Day, Oscar Levant, and even S. Z. Sakall are pleasant and damn funny. A comedy of chaos is always bound to leave you with some evergreen scenes, and Curtiz makes sure that you have plenty. That drinking scene between Peter and Oscar will go down in my cinema books as a blasting and highlighting paragraph. Thank you for the lovely picture, dear legend, Michael Curtiz. Lastly, there is no magic in the film, but "It's Magic!"
