Better than I'd expected
6 October 2023
I came to this with no great hopes especially as comedy is not a genre I'm into. Well, I was pleasantly surprised.

We're in fantasy land, of course. There's no way such a secret could have been kept for so long. And some of the plot development was crass - the cake, for instance. Its relevance to the plot might as well have been foghorned in advance, so obvious were the clues signalling that it was going to mean the downfall of the lads.

The two leads were attractive and apparently straight in real life. They did a fair job of being two gay lovers although I did notice no tongues used in the snogging scenes.

The weakest link was - the usually wonderful - Stephen Fry. He's just so familiar he didn't make a convincing king at all.

So this was a worthwhile bit of escapism. But ten stars? Come on! That's demeaning the several gay themed films that actually deserve them or even nine.
