I Like the Way Snrub Thinks
9 October 2023
I'll start this off on a positive note. I have nothing against fan fiction, but I can't stand self promotion when it means people are being lied to. I found out about 'Exterminator: Retribution' because this short film gets a mention on the original's wiki page. So I tracked it down and the reality of someone's ego set in as I was bathed in cheap amateur hour fantasy. All the fake reviews here just reinforce the sadness at play.

John Eastland before he passed away gave Uncle Tom (that's not a joke) a handwritten note to pass to his grown son Jake (director, writer, star Rui Constantino) when the time was right. He apologies for not being there more but explains it was because he was busy and needs to reveal a secret. That he was the 'Exterminator' and now it's his son's time to be the hero the city needs. So he battles thugs, saves victims, kills dirty police and takes on a powerful mob boss.

I've seen more than a few people try to prop themselves up on IMDb. I feel with good certainly that's going on here. So many positive well liked reviews, overall score. Tell me that this isn't the director himself. Look at his bio / credits. Maybe crew, friends, family doing this. I could get mad about it, but it's just sad. Can't get any real praise so why not create it yourself.

Working with friends & possessing some computer skills, he obviously had little budget and delivers a disjointed story. The Exterminator always appears via green screen as he fires a weapon. All the violence is CGI rendered. Filming is composed of everyday footage he could snag - commuter train going by, a bunch of fire trucks responding to a call. What's not is someone's house, basement, a warehouse they probably worked at. Maybe some drone shots, stock footage.

This 44 minute (not including credits) piece is a barrage of amateur acting, drastic up & down camera work and feels like a fans creation all the way. It captures the spirit by using a welders mask & a flamethrower in a bit of fan service, but let's be real about it's quality. One explosion is literally taken from a video game. Don't believe me? Watch 'Retribution' and you be the judge.
