"Madness Of The Heart" (1949) is a well-mounted, entertainingly ripe romantic thriller along the lines of "Gaslight". It was actually the directorial debut of Charles Bennett, a longtime Alfred Hitchcock collaborator as a screenwriter ("The Man Who Knew Too Much", "The 39 Steps", "Sabotage", etc.), and some of that Hitchcock spirit is hovering over the proceedings. Well-acted, especially by the duplicitous Kathleen Byron, who steals the movie from the slightly sticky leads. In fact, there should have been a spin-off with Byron's character ruining the lives of a new set of people (although the ending of this one would need some major revising for that to happen....). **1/2 out of 4.
