The first Shrek animation
26 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is an early footage from the first Shrek movie while it was still in development, with Chris Farley instead of Mike Myers playing the role of the green ogre.

Now, I know very well CGI in the nineties had its technical limitations, and maybe for its time it was an impressive feat, but I have to say this version of Shrek is absolutely hideous-looking.

I guess it fits the message from the first movie, about not judging by appearances. But in all honesty, the storyboard art has way more charm, which makes me believe this Shrek would have been much better as a traditional animated film rather than a CGI one.

Shrek was also quite ugly in the original book by William Steig, but the illustrations still had a certain charm that does not translate well into a more realistic aesthetic.

Still, an interesting find. Is also interesting to know that Shrek apparently started as much "edgier", low budget film before becoming such a cultural phenomenon from the early 2000s.
