Fourth time watching this, and I'm still blown away by how amazing a film it is.
There are no words.
It's hard to even try to explain its greatness with these stupid letters on my screen that I can tap.
Of course, nothing will ever quite compare to the first time I watched this, back in 2013, when the film was basically all I could think about for a week or two. The extremely bold combination of beautiful music, colours, and cinematography with disgusting visuals, incredibly disturbing violence, and horrifically disturbing character of Albert Spica all contrasted in a way I couldn't get out of my mind.
Michael Gambon and Helen Mirren are phenomenal, Michael Nyman's score is god-tier, the set design and costumes (the latter of which I don't usually notice in movies) are great, it's tense, disturbing, there's political/social commentary if you want to read into all that, and the final 10 minutes go so hard I can't help but be in absolute disbelief every time I finish this film (in a good way).
For those with strong stomachs, this is an absolute must watch, and I easily count it among my favourite films of all time.
