Ordinary social melodrama made in Luis Bunuel's Mexican period: not completely without interest, but if you're looking for traces of the director, you won't find so many here. You may have to settle for Katy Jurado getting visibly turned on by Pedro Armendáriz's muscles, or a very old man with a candy-eating fetish. Pedro Armendáriz brings a fearsome physical presence to the title role, while Katy Jurado is fiery, especially in the final section. It's certainly not a bad movie, but it hardly qualifies as a must-see for anyone who is not going through Bunuel's entire catalog, either. ** out of 4.
