Not so bad epic seafaring adventures ; although at top of the bill ,Anna Maria Pierangeli (aka Pier Angeli ,once James Dean's fiancée) is not really the central character ;neither is Edmund Purdom , often featured in these sword and sandals /swashbuckler films ("the prodigal son" " the Egyptian" .)
His part of a doctor sent to hard labor is not so implausible today ;in a charity organization , I met a Syrian surgeon who treated a wounded patient from the "wrong" side ,thus became a political prisoner and took refuge in France .
No central character ,but plenty of them , cowards (the noble man ) , virtuous chivalrous hero (the doctor) , ambiguous person (the captain) brave aristocratic woman (played by French Michelle Girardon ) ;lots of sadism (the flogged doctor) and cruelty (the men thrown overboard and who are shot before they can reach the lifeboat, some kind of the seafaring most dangerous game in miniature ..
Certainly not a great film, but entertaining throughout ;actually Silvio Amadio began with a very good movie "lupi nell' abisso"( wolves of the deep)** ,then opted for the sword and sandals and the sword and sandals genres -this one being the best of a mediocre lot) ,ad eventually sank into porno.
**A submarine has been torpedoed and lays at the bottom of the sea ,110m (390ft) under the water and only one man will be able to get out of it;this first Amadio effort deserves your undivided attention.
