Escapist Thriller Well Worth the Watching
29 February 2024
The Cassandra Crossing is a 1970's thriller with a cast of box office stars that was watchable while keeping me fixed to the screen. The movie presents a train that has orders from the US military to divert it from its Paris destination to the abandoned site of a concentration camp in Poland. One of the passengers has come down with a highly contagious disease that has already infected passengers. You get the sense of travelling on a runaway train as it hurtles from one destination to another. At each stop we view lights and barricades alongside the rail tracks to prevent escape. There is some beautiful scenery along the way with passengers enjoying the fun until word seeps out and more succumb to the disease. I found the cast very entertaining as the viewer takes in the interaction on board. Richard Harris is the medical doctor who takes charge while Burt Lancaster sends orders to shoot and kill any passenger who tries to escape. Harris and Sophia Loren are a divorced couple who have rekindled their romance, which takes on new life at the height of the action. Martin Sheen, Lee Strasbourg, Ava Gardner, Ingrid Thulin, OJ Simpson, and Valli are among the cast. One of the many watchable movies from the 1970's, I was glad to catch it on Britbox.
