When you're a yankee doodle dandy, you've got to spy hard.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a typical post-war spy thriller set in the war and featuring James Cagney in an atypical role. He's training O. S. S. Agents for an important mission, and during all the intrigue across the pond discovers to his horror that one of them is a double agent. I found it pretty easy to guess who the double agent is, but in the meantime enjoyed all the intrigue, fun character bits and narrated information about how this agency works.

Co-starring Annabella, Richard Conte, Frank Latimore, Sam Jaffe and Walter Abel, this is nicely directed by Henry Hathaway, and features a compelling, frequently surprising script, fraught with dangers at every turn. I particularly enjoyed the tests of what sound they were hearing, and you'd have to be pretty clever to get it right.

Not much different though than others thrillers of the late 1940's, but a fun time filler. Others with similar plots were closer to noir, but this doesn't have those elements. Blanche Yurka has a key cameo as a French contact, which led me to imagine her as a more grounded descendant of Madame de Farge. Pretty easy to follow as the writers ensure that anything complicated gets thoroughly explained.
