With the approach of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1990 a nationwide program to build and assemble Maori tribal war canoes (waka taua) was set in motion. The result was a 22 strong fleet, powered by 1,000 paddlers - the biggest gathering ever seen of Maori was canoes.
