Sex & Nudity

  • First Shakespeare movie ever made. Iconic for that reason. And there's no adult content. But it is silent and only a few minutes long, so it is not really a resource to help read or experience Shakespeare's play.

Violence & Gore

  • John is shown in great pain and distress as he dies from poisoning.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In Scene One John, in battledress, is shown inducing Hubert to kill Arthur who is nearby, picking flowers. In the second Scene, Arthur's mother, Constance is seen on her knees, in great distress, lamenting his capture by John to Philip, Lewis and Pandulf. The third Scene (the extant film) depicts the dramatic action of John dying from poisoning. He is sat in a chair, unable to walk, writhing in agony and talking deliriously (unheard as it is a silent film). John's young son Henry is by his side, attempting to comfort his father but being rebuffed as John is in too much pain. John's nobles, Salisbury and Pembroke, are either side of him and move to support him when, at the end of the scene, he stands up. The fourth, last Scene, shows John seated again and crowned, receiving Faulconbridge and then dying. Pembroke takes the crown off John's head and crowns Henry with it as Salisbury and Falconbridge bend their knees to him, John's dead body remaining seated in the chair.
