After years of reading Mary Pickford's films with the Independent Moving Pictures Company were for the most part horrible and inferior, I was pleasantly surprised with this delightful film and found it very fun to watch. Mary is playful, spunky, very flirtatious and she she looks at ease and happy in this film with her real life husband Owen Moore. She is billed as Mary Pickford, " Americas Sweetheart " In Old Madrid. The story is about a handsome fellow Jose ( Owen Moore ) who becomes infatuated with the flirty and pretty Zelda ( Mary Pickford ). The girl's parents do not approve and the the young Spanish couple have quite a time trying to be alone. Finally they decide to give her parents a scare, it works and the parents give their consent, and Zelda seals it with a kiss on Joses lips. I was quite surprised at just how many times Mary and Owen do kiss full on the lips, something Mary balked at doing for a D.W Griffith film, but perhaps in this film it is because Owen was her husband at the time. Owen Moore also looks at ease and very suave as the handsome Spanish suitor and he gives a very spirited performance. The films locales are quite picturesque and overall I found " In Old Madrid " a charming story and an interesting historical example from this period in Mary Pickford's career. My only complaint is why hasn't this early surviving film been remastered!.
