Mice and Men - Lost Silent Film
PamelaShort13 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This was Marguerite Clark's tenth film and is set in Virginia before the civil war. Mark Embury ( Charles Waldron ) is quite distressed that he will never find the perfect wife. To remedy this dilemma, he decides to raise one to meet his specifications, and adopts Peggy ( Marguerite Clark ) from an orphanage. Everything seems to be going smoothly, until Peggy meets Captain George Lovell ( Marshall Neilan ) Mark's nephew, a hero of the Mexican war. Peggy falls in love with the dashing Captain, but when rumours surface that George has an ongoing romance with another woman, Peggy is heartbroken. She goes back to her benefactor and says she will marry him, even though she still loves his nephew. Mark is pleased and to satisfy his own happiness he is tempted to let Peggy go on believing the rumours about George, but finally capitulates and tells her the rumours are false. Peggy and George become happily married, while Mark resigns himself to bachelorhood with the knowledge that he raised the perfect wife, albeit for someone else.

Mice and Men was directed by J.Searle Dawley and produced by Daniel Frohman for the Famous Players Film Company. Based on a 1903 Broadway play by Madeleine Lucette Ryley, it was released on January 10, 1916 and now sadly remains a lost silent film.
