You Are There!

It's odd how certain images get so into the public mind that they become ridiculous in themselves. Here is the chubby-looking, pencil-mustachioed Frank Buck, strolling around the jungle in pith helmet and shorts, to order the natives in how to capture pythons, monkeys and tigers for zoos in the United States.

It sounds ridiculous, and if you watch carefully you will see some careful camera cheating to make things look more dangerous than they actually are -- it looks, for example, as if he captures a 20-foot python by throwing his jacket over it. Yet Buck did capture these wild animals and if there was a certain amount of cheating for the camera, well, it works. Which is all the justification one needs.

Both dated and somewhat boring!

Warning: Spoilers
Despite its subject matter -- director-narrator Frank Buck hunts down and captures various wild animals in the Malaysian jungles and then ships them back to American zoos -- this movie suffers from what one contemporary reviewer aptly described as "a paucity of excitement." True, the film's editors, Horace and Stacy Woodard, have done what they can to brighten up the rather tame material that Frank Buck brought back to Hollywood from the Malaysian jungles. If nothing else, Buck was a very successful self-promoter. Although he is completely forgotten today, in the nineteen thirties, Frank Buck was a household name in the United State and Canada -- a name always associated by the public as a daring, intrepid and highly successful hunter who supplied American zoos with more exotic animals than would fill Noah's Ark ten times over! If nothing else, Buck was a master of self-promotion. Frankly, only a really hardy armchair traveler will find much of interest here. On the other hand, if the movie's over-the-top eight reels were condensed to one or two, "Fang and Claw" might have a passing appeal to intrepid armchair travelers.
