Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.
Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.
They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

Ben Stiller’s Zoolander is an infinitely quotable cult classic among comedy aficionadoes, and a sequel should have been easier to pull off than turning left. Still, the film failed epically, creating a reckoning for Stiller. Speaking with David Duchovny on the actor’s Fail Better podcast, Stiller says he was “blindsided” by the box office bombing of Zoolander 2 after thinking it would surprise fans more than David Bowie’s cameo in the original film.
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said about the sequel to his 2001 meme-worthy comedy. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really f—ed this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.”
“It really freaked me out because I was like, ‘I didn’t know it was that bad?’ ” Stiller continued. “What scared me the most on that one was I’m losing what I think what’s funny,...

The original script for Pretty Woman had far from a pretty ending.
Speaking with fellow actress Patricia Arquette for Variety‘s Actors on Actors series last week, Julia Roberts revealed that the screenplay she auditioned for was a far cry from the rom-com that fans know and love today.
“So many, many, many years ago, one of my early auditions was for a movie called 3,000. Most people don’t know that 3,000 was the original Pretty Woman script. And the ending was really heavy,” Arquette, 51, said to kick of her interview with Roberts, 51.

Brett Johnson and Oscar-nominated The Player scribe Michael Tolkin began working with each other as producer-writers on Ray Donovan and it was during that
series that they made an immediate go at adapting the true story about two inmates who escaped the maximum security Clinton Correctional facility in the quiet town of Dannemora in upstate New York. The twist? The inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat had help from a female prison worker, Joyce Tilly Mitchell, who was romantically involved with them. Johnson and Tolkin’s script would become the limited Showtime series Escape at Dannemora. Ben Stiller initially was attracted to the project, backed away, and then became intrigued again when the New York State Office of the Inspector General issued this 150 page report dissecting the prison break and aftermath. Norma Shearer films Note: This article is being revised and expanded. Please check back later. Turner Classic Movies' Norma Shearer month comes to a close this evening, Nov. 24, '15, with the presentation of the last six films of Shearer's two-decade-plus career. Two of these are remarkably good; one is schizophrenic, a confused mix of high comedy and low drama; while the other three aren't the greatest. Yet all six are worth a look even if only because of Norma Shearer herself – though, really, they all have more to offer than just their top star. Directed by W.S. Van Dyke, the no-expense-spared Marie Antoinette (1938) – $2.9 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever made up to that time – stars the Canadian-born Queen of MGM as the Austrian-born Queen of France. This was Shearer's first film in two years (following Romeo and Juliet) and her first release following husband Irving G.

If you’ve never listened to horror radio, I wouldn’t blame ya. Most old radio shows are hokey, musty relics of forgotten times, only chilling to housewives in 1942. But there are exceptions, recordings from long ago with strange powers that have only grown over the passing decades. If you can look past the sometimes-dated presentation and put yourself in the right mindset, the best horror radio is like listening to the distant cries of ancient ghosts. Collected below are my ten favorite old-timey radio horror broadcasts. Turn off the lights and listen! [You can hear each episode by clicking on the title.] 1) Suspense: "Ghost Hunt" Forget The Blair Witch Project; this episode of Suspense marks the real beginning of found-footage horror. Recorded way back in 1949, the story is told through audiotapes “discovered” after wacky radio disc jockey Smiley Smith goes mad in a haunted house. Smiley starts off treating his visit like a goofy radio stunt, but before long,...

No Doubt is ramping up for the release of their first album in eleven years and are taking fans behind the scenes in a series of webisodes documenting the making of the set, the first of which was premiered by the band yesterday on its website.
"Over the past few months, Gwen, Tony, Tom and Adrian have been recording together and filming the process at producer Spike Stent's studio in Santa Monica, California," the band writes in the introductory post.
The album is actually years in the making. The band began initial work on the record in March 2008, after Gwen Stefani wrapped the tour behind her second solo album, The Sweet Escape. Songwriting on the effort reportedly got off to a slow start because, according to a post from Stefani, she was distracted by her second pregnancy, and was delayed further when the band, energized by being in the studio...

Comedy couple Harold and Kumar get all festive in A Very Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas. Here's Ron's review...
It’s been three years since Harold and Kumar had their last big Hollywood adventure, Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, and seven years since Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle. However, that’s the real-world time stream. In Harold and Kumar’s world, it’s been six years since everyone’s second-favorite pair of stoners escaped from the clutches of the United States government, and since that time things have changed greatly for our heroes.
Harold (John Cho) has settled into a happy life. He’s married to a beautiful woman whose father-in-law (Danny Trejo in a great role) hates him, he’s got a great job on Wall Street, and he’s well on his way to becoming one of the one per cent richest people the...

Chicago – “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” delivers exactly what fans should expect from it and even a bit more, as the actors who play the stoner icons have gotten noticeably better at their craft and the production team behind the film has gone all out in a quest to throw as many jokes as possible at the viewer in a barrage of attempts at hilarity. It’s one of those comedies in which if one joke falls flat for you (and more than one definitely will), it’s mere seconds before the writers are trying something different. Every time the film threatens to collapse, the sheer manic nature of the piece saves it.
Rating: 3.5/5.0

Harold and Kumar are back with a crass comedy just in time for Christmas. And you know what? It’s absolutely hilarious. Featuring in-your-face 3D, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is a blisteringly irreverent comedy that prods prejudice stereotypes and takes shots at sacred cows (sometimes literally) while constructing a wild holiday adventure that is surprisingly sweet. Todd Strauss-Schulson makes his feature debut, which admittedly is a bit choppy in construction, but is kept rolling along with plenty of absurd and obscene sequences thanks to screenwriters Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who penned the pair’s previous journeys Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Hurwitz and Schlossberg bring in the best elements of the first films (fearlessly politically incorrect jokes, off-the-wall characters, themes of loyalty and friendship, and Neil Patrick Harris) but up the ante with tons of holiday-themed madness, and 3D-friendly mayhem.

Much like the beloved heroes of the franchise, the .Harold & Kumar. series is growing up. The third installment still features toilet humor and gasp, male and female nudity, but the jokes are a bit smarter and the direction is a tad sharper.
The film even touches on problems with Wall Street when Harold (John Cho), who has now climbed up the ladder of success at the investment firm of Brewster Keegan, must run for safety as the protesters pelt him with eggs.
A lot has happened since the release of the last film .Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.. Cho became a part of the praiseworthy .Star Trek. and his partner-in-crime, Kal Penn, who plays Kumar, took a two-year sabbatical to work at the White House.
The plot takes place six years after the events of .Guantanamo Bay.. Harold and Kumar have gone their separate ways. Harold is now married...

0. The Challenge of Escapism
Like Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), we live our lives obsessed by thoughts of escape. Escape from our jobs, escape from our relationships, escape from our friends and escape from a life dominated by work, travel and a raging torrent of TV dinners and talent shows that carries us all the way to our graves. Capitalism is the greatest prison of all because its walls are built not of bricks and mortar but of dreams and aspiration. The marketplace is saturated with opportunities to escape the mundane drudgery of our lives: Get a better job! Move to the country! Get plastic surgery! Get a better boyfriend! Get a better body! Dress like Cheryl Cole! We work impossible hours at impossible jobs in the hope that someday we might find a way of being another person in another place.
We want out.

Conrad Veidt is Turner Classic Movies' "Summer Under the Stars" performer of the day. An international star since the 1920s, Veidt worked in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Hollywood — twice. [Conrad Veidt Movie Schedule.] In the late '20s, Veidt was the star of unusual Hollywood fare such as Paul Leni's The Man Who Laughs (1928), in the title role as a man with a grin-like scar where his mouth should be, and Paul Fejos' The Last Performance (1929), as a magician in love with pretty Mary Philbin — a Universal star who also happened to be Veidt's leading lady in The Man Who Laughs. With the arrival of talking pictures, Veidt returned to Germany, but with the ascent of the Nazis he fled first to England and later to the United States. In the Hollywood of the early '40s, Veidt became everybody's favorite Nazi in movies such as Nazi Agent, Escape, and Casablanca.
