Metaphorical money grows on falling trees.

Warning: Spoilers
The logging industry has always been fascinating to me, watching these huge round rolling pieces of wood heading into the water and down to where they're collected to go to factories, either for paper or for lumber. There have been many movies made on the subject, making the "northern" a subset of the western genre and visually fascinating.

This entry reunites Richard Arlen and Andy Devine for one of their more than a dozen pairings, although initially they are on opposite sides. Land owner Linda Hayes is selling lumber off her property, and Arlen warns her about agricultural issues regarding the cutting down of trees. She has a contract with Willard Robertson, a ruthless lumber company owner who resorts to violence to fulfill the order. Devine is initially on Hayes' payroll but joins forces with Arlen when Robertson goes too far

In most of the films that I've seen with Arlen and Devine, I've found Devine far too over the top and extremely annoying. But here the focus is less on the comedy and more the story so he is much more subtle than normal. The results are a decent B Universal action film that at only an hour flys by and keeps the viewer intrigued. Much of the film is set at night outdoors so the photography is a bit dark. The action highlight is Arlen rushing to get out of the way of a rolling log, seemingly pushed in his direction.

horn-523 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The thirteenth in a series of fourteen B-features made by Universal from 1939-1941 co-starring Richard Arlen and Andy Devine.

This one is set in the timber country where Tim MacGregor (Willard Roberston), unscrupulous lumber operator, obtains by bribery a contract to cut a vast quantity of timber from land owned by Kay Handley (Linda Hayes), rich débutante. When Dick O'Hara (Richard Arlen), forestry inspector, demands a postponement, MacGrgeor refuses and sends his henchman, Jean Collet (Francis McDonald), to obtain the services of the famous "bull-of-the-woods" Andy Jensen (Andy Devine) and his partner "Lucky" (Paul E. Burns) Kay arrives and gives her permission to cut the timber, defying Dick.

Dickm with his two assistants, Withers (Riley Hill as Roy Harris) and "Tex" (Gaylord Pendleton), begins a survey of the timber stand. When Dick and Tex finally reveal MacGrgeor as a crook, Collet is sent to kill "Tex" and obtain the reports.

A fight ensues and "Lucky" is killed by one of Collet's flying knives. Kay then admits that Dick is right and helps him trap Collet. Dick and Andy force a confession from Collet and MacGregor is exposed.
