Quotes

  • Maria : Pilar told me that time is not important.

Robert Jordan : Maybe Pilar's right.

Maria : Three days and three nights. Yet they're everything. Longer than the months in prison. Longer than the years I've lived. She told me something else when I left the cave. She said we must live all our life in the time that remains

  • Maria : I do not know how to kiss or I would kiss you. Where do the noses go? Always I wonder where the noses will go.

    [kiss]

Maria : They're not in the way, are they? I always that they would be in the way.

    [kiss]

Maria : Look, I can do it myself.

    [kiss]

    Robert Jordan : Maria.

Maria : Oh, did I do it wrong?

    [big kiss]

  • Robert Jordan : Are you afraid?

Maria : Not now. I love you, Roberto. Always remember. I love you as I loved my father and mother, as I love our unborn children, as I love what I love most in the world, and I love you more. Always remember.

    Robert Jordan : I'll remember.

Maria : Nothing can ever part us now, can it?

    Robert Jordan : Nothing, Maria.

  • Maria : Kiss me.

    Robert Jordan : You're shameless.

    Maria : Yes.

  • Robert Jordan : If you weren't a Gypsy, I'd shoot ya.

  • Robert Jordan : You've got to understand, Maria. I'm in this war to the finish. I can't have anything serious in my life. A man doing what I'm doing never knows what's going to happen.

Maria : Whatever happens to you will happen to me.

  • Fernando : Tell us, Ingles, why have you come so far to fight for our Republic?

Robert Jordan : A man fights for what he believes in, Fernando.

Fernando : Well, but, in his own country.

Robert Jordan : Well, maybe you feel that I'm sticking my nose into other people's business. But, I don't feel that way. It's not only Spain fighting here, is it? It's Germany and Italy on one side and Russia on the the other. And the Spanish people right in the middle of it all. The Nazis and Fascists are just as much against democracy as they are against the communists. And they're using your country as a proving ground for their new war machinery. Their tanks and dive bombers and stuff like that. So they can get the jump on the democracies and knock off England and France and my country before we get armed and ready to fight.

  • Fernando : Were you always a Republican? And was your father?

Robert Jordan : Sure. Voted the Republican ticket all his life.

Fernando : Did they shoot him for it?

Robert Jordan : No. No, they don't shoot you for being a Republican in America.

  • Maria : How much time have we left?

Robert Jordan : A lifetime, Maria.

  • Maria : Pilar said I must tell you everything. And now you won't love me. Tomorrow you'll take me through the lines and I'll never see you again. Never. You won't want me. No, Roberto, we can't change things. But it's true ,I never kissed any man until you. When things were done to me, I fought until they tied my arms...

Robert Jordan : No one's touched you! No one,

    Maria : You believe that?

Robert Jordan : I know that.

Maria : And you can love me?

Robert Jordan : I can love you more.

  • Maria : They were shoving me across the square and into the doorway and up the stairs of the City Hall - to the office of my father - where they put me on the couch.

    Robert Jordan : Maria.

Maria : It was there the worst things were done.

  • Anselmo : They always spit in the gorge. It brings luck.

Robert Jordan : I wish I could spit that far.

  • Anselmo : That sentry - he looks like a man from my village. He's very young. He must die?

Robert Jordan : You couldn't do it, Anselmo?

Anselmo : I would kill the sentry, yes, considering the necessity of the bridge. But if I live later, I'll try to live in such a way, doing no harm to anyone, that it will be forgiven.

  • Maria : You blow trains?

    Robert Jordan : I have.

  • Robert Jordan : I'm thinking about the bridge.

Maria : I'm thinking about you, Roberto.

    Robert Jordan : Why Maria?

    Maria : Well, I don't know.

  • Maria : Dry your feet well.

Robert Jordan : You can't dry them with your hair?

Pilar : What a swine! Hit him with a chunk of wood, Maria.

Robert Jordan : I'm joking because I'm happy.

    Maria : You are happy?

Robert Jordan : Yes. I think everything goes well.

  • Maria : If you're wounded, we won't be captured. I could kill you before I kill myself.

Robert Jordan : Do you have many ideas like that?

  • Robert Jordan : If you go then I go with you. That way I go too. I know you'll go now, Maria. For both of us. Because we love each other, always.
