SYNOPSIS: Lance Taggart, owner of the Red Rock saloon, has plans to take over the local homesteads, but is thwarted by Marshal Lash La Rue.

COMMENT: Except for the presence of the lovely Suzi Crandall, this is a somewhat dull entry in the Lash La Rue series. True, there's a fair amount of fighting (in which Mr La Rue admirably performs almost all his own stunts) and hard riding (always filmed from the same boring camera angles, mostly panned left to right), but the villain has no personality to speak of. He's one of the most tepid heavies we've ever encountered.

The script, of course, is an amalgam of various western clichés, including the ticking clock (a motif which later reached the height of perfection in "High Noon") and the final gunfight (later topped in "The Gunfight at the OK Corral").

The music score can only be described as insistently banal.

Undiscriminating fans (are there any out there?) will enjoy this outing nonetheless.

Lash to the rescue

Warning: Spoilers
US Marshall Lash LaRue and his side kick Fuzzy Jones aka Fuzzy St John are summoned to a small town called Red Rock, where one of the ranchers, Taggart, has seized control of the water. If anyone wants to water their cattle they have to pay a dollar a head. On top of it Taggart and his men have been killing anyone who gets in his way, going so far as to use a trumped up charges and kangaroo court.

Action packed film is a great deal of fun. You have really bad bad guys and really good guys and it makes for some dynamic clashes as you can't wait for the bad guys to get whats coming to them.

For me this is almost a truly great western, it falls down in one key plot point which is Taggart and his men have killed off either by gun fire or lynching several law men sent to investigate matters in the town. How this has never managed to cause them any problems or resulted in an army of law men coming to town is beyond me. Yea I know one shouldn't think about the plots of these programmers but its almost too much to let go.

Definitely worth a look.

Lash makes his mark ...................
revdrcac11 August 2006
The original Man in Black, Lash LaRue, appears in this standard western programmer from 1948. LaRue tangles with a bad guy tying up water rights in the old west . Fuzzy St. John appears again as the loyal sidekick, engaging in his usual shenanigans along the way.

LaRue had a huge following in the rural south and remained popular on the movie convention circuit thru the 1990's. This film was a fairly standard Lash film, with the usual fistfights and chase scenes.

The prolific Tom London appears in this one, anchoring a familiar supporting cast. Not everyone is fan of LaRue's films, but this one is worth a look......... This one is average, but a good diversion.
