For those who are not familiar with the new app by Blackmagic (announced together with full-frame Cinema Camera 6K), here’s the description by Apple: “The Blackmagic Camera unlocks the power of your iPhone by adding digital film camera controls and operating systems. Now you can create the same cinematic ‘look’ as Hollywood feature films. You get the same intuitive and user-friendly interface as Blackmagic Design’s award-winning cameras. So it’s just like using a professional digital film camera. This means you can adjust settings such as frame rate, shutter angle, white balance, and Iso all in a single tap. Or record directly to Blackmagic Cloud in industry-standard 10-bit Apple ProRes files up to 4K.

Yet another interesting experiment was conducted by Michael Cioni from Strada. This time, the guys at Strada are trying to figure out how camera assistants can utilize the Apple Vision Pro (Avp) in professional moviemaking and deal with missions like pulling focus and controlling the cinema lens.
Filmmaking with the Apple Vision Pro. Picture: Strada Welcome to the era of modern production
Strada wants to prove a point here. That future productions will be assembled by software rather than expensive equipment. The power of software applications is greater than hardware. However, you still need hardware to utilize applications. For instance, the use of Avp (Apple Vision Pro) on a professional movie set. In the previous episode, the iPhone 15 Pro was paired with a true anamorphic lens (Atlas Mercury) to output professional images in a professional film set. Another interesting experiment by Michael Cioni from Strada tries to prove that the iPhone 15 Pro is capable of producing professional images just like a high-end cinema camera, by strengthening it with an anamorphic cinema lens.
iPhone 15 Pro with anamorphic lens and the Blackmagic Camera App iPhone 15 Pro as a professional cinema camera
Although Apple has already done this experiment when it was executed with $70,000 of professional cinema equipment. The previous experiment made by Michael Cioni from Strada demonstrated even more cinematic imagery by applying AI post-production tools/plugins like Depth Scanner in order to reduce the depth of field. No, this is not clickbait. Actually, due to the (very) slow development tempo of Fcp (Final Cut Pro), many Fcp editors, fans, and enthusiasts, were concerned that the Fcp will end like Aperture, which means Eol is close. Luckily, Apple’s Fcp team confirmed that this is not the case.
Apple Final Cut Pro. (Desktop and iPad). Fcp is moving slowly
This is not a secret that Fcp’s R&d is moving like a turtle. Furthermore, when comparing it to the competitors.. well…there’s nothing to be compared, as Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve (the main contenders to Fcp) release every new and major update almost every month on the clock. Premiere Pro has its own dedicated product development Beta cycle and roadmap, which pushes releases like hotcakes in order to boost R&d. Giorgio Miraflor’s ‘Me + Lee’ Is a Love Letter to the Intangible Energy That Exists Between Siblings
For many, there is an unfathomable bond of love between siblings which spans lifetimes regardless of whatever is thrown at it, and within that enduring connection exists an ineffable energy which filmmaker Giorgio Miraflor poignantly captures in his latest short Me + Lee. The second instalment in the Brooklyn based filmmaker’s genre traversing short film series, Me + Lee is a narrative led slice of life drama inspired by his own fraternal relationship, whilst also being a reflection of his Filipino heritage. Set within a flat brimming with signifiers of the rich relationship which unfolded within its walls, Miraflor effectively uses the location to immerse us in the cloistered life of his protagonist, a reclusive existence which could potential be shifted by an unexpected conversation with his pizza delivery guy. Dn invited Miraflor to join us for a conversation about his desire to show realistic, non-caricature depictions of Filipino lives in his films,...

What’s the darkest moment you’ve ever seen in a rock ‘n’ roll documentary? Up until now, I’d have said the answer was obvious: the sequence in “Gimme Shelter” where Meredith Hunter, in his lime-green suit, rushes the stage at Altamont with a gun in his hand and gets stabbed in the back, half a dozen times, by a member of the Hell’s Angels. For pure heart of darkness, what could top that? But I’ve just seen “Catching Fire” (formerly titled “Anita”), Svetlana Zill and Alexis Bloom’s very good documentary about Anita Pallenberg — beautiful and imperious scenester of the ’60s and ’70s, Hollywood actress and icon of scruffy-chic rock royalty, partner of Keith Richards, muse to several of the other Rolling Stones. And there’s a moment in it that made me suck in my breath in shock and horror as much as “Gimme Shelter” does.

“If you surrendered to the air, you could ride it”- Song of Solomon from Toni Morrison our Beloved
If you are a Black woman who reads, you carry with you a quote by Toni Morrison that has done the work of saving your life, making you feel whole and seen. Yet, we have no visual representation, film or television adaptation, that truly captures all that she means to us – to the world.
This morning, I awoke to the news of her death and as I’ve been toiling away on my own film and TV work, I had to come out of the woodshed to write about one of the greatest writing influences of my life. Ms. Morrison ticks all of the boxes. She tightened and strengthened my backbone so that I could face the world, bravely, in my darker skin. I can’t name another author that delighted...

Conversations about diversity and inclusion have become a necessity in Hollywood considering the demand and need for authentic representation in TV and film. Earlier this week, UTA hosted their second Diversity Showrunner Panel with Tanya Saracho (Vida), Aida Croal, Marco Ramirez, Marja-Lewis Ryan (the forthcoming The L-Word sequel) and Aaron Thomas — and they did not hold back.
Moderated by Samie Falvey, who will serve as executive producer of Jessica Gao’s forthcoming comedy pilot at ABC, the panelists shared their stories — some of them horrific, some of them not — about working on shows and how it was like to be “the other” in a writers’ room. “The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin” is a 1978 Kung Fu action film, mixing up a melting pot of action, politics, Buddhism, comedy, high drama and lots of cool moves. This is a film for men by men filled with men! The only female character is one of the students at Mr Ho’s college, who pops up occasionally, but atypically in this historical setting, a woman gaining an education! Apart from this one brave participant for femininity, this is a man-tastic film!

Von claims he forked over his initial check in Feb. 2017 -- and hasn't received a dime. Mazion had a fight in April 2017 -- after...

Not so very long ago I had a co-worker who described himself as a movie geek, film fan, cinema addict, what have you. He talked about film as if he knew all about it. I asked him one day what he thought of Orson Welles. His reply?
“I don’t think about Orson Welles, he was old and fat, now he’s dead, what am I supposed to think about him?”
Needless to say I never really talked to this person again, who shall remain nameless. Of course the fact that he was an egocentric, arrogant, narcissistic weasel didn’t help matters. (He claimed to have a small part in Tombstone, I have seen that movie several times, never spotted him, by the way…)
I simply cannot fathom the arrogance of someone dismissing, so casually one of the greatest film makers who ever lived. I have been fascinated, obsessed even,...

There's very little written about Gregory Ratoff's movies and even less about the man himself. On the set of Black Magic (1949), it was reported that he liked to bark commands like a parody of the autocratic director in the Erich von Stroheim mold. Yet he turned out dozens of mid-budget studio pictures and was personally chosen to take over Intermezzo by Selznick, a producer who liked to control every aspect of his films. >> -Sean Axmaker...

Studio: Hen’s Tooth
Orson Welles is Cagliostro in 1949's Black Magic.
Based on a novel by Alexander Dumas, the 1949 mystery-drama film Black Magic stars Orson Welles (Macbeth) as the 18th century master hypnotist and charismatic charlatan, Cagliostro.
After his mother is executed for supposedly practicing “witchcraft,” young Joseph Balsamo is raised by gypsies. Under their tutelage, he perfects his skills performing magic tricks and selling snake oil in the gypsy’s travelling caravan show. Eventually Balsamo meets Franz Mesmer, the famous hypnotist, who convinces Joseph he has even greater gifts which could heal the sick. But Joseph chooses a very different path assuming the name Cagliostro and embarking on a vendetta for power over the man who ordered his mother’s death.
Directed by Gregory Ratoff, the rarely-screened film also stars Nancy Guild, Akim Tamiroff, Margot Graham and Raymond Burr.

Yonkers - Ernie Kovacs is the patron saint of innovative TV comedies. His impact can be felt on everything from Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In to Monty Python’s Flying Circus to Saturday Night Live. Shout! Factory’s The Ernie Kovacs Collection gives a survey of his short yet stellar career that ended in 1962 with his death. The boxset doesn’t have any of the episodes from his original Three to Get Ready show that aired on Philly TV. But we get a healthy helping of his other shows that allowed him to bounce between NBC, CBS, ABC and even the legendary DuMont. Along with creating comedy shows, he hosted talkshows, gameshows and even variety shows. He even contributed to Mad Magazine. His famous mustache and cigar popped up all over the dial.

Is the named director of a film the one who's actually been calling the shots? Here are 11 where a 'ghost director' may have been involved.
It's not that uncommon for a director to take their name off a film, and to leave the moniker Alan Smithee or whatever the current equivalent is behind. However, what's considerably rarer is when a film is released under the name of one director, but it's later revealed or rumoured that, actually, other hands were at work, either for a solid chunk or even the entirety of a production. That a film was, for want of a better phrase, 'ghost directed'.
