Thor: Ragnarok delivered an expected #1 finish in its second weekend at the domestic box office, pushing the film's domestic total ahead of both the first and second Thor films after just ten days in release. However, just as much a story are the strong openings for a batch of newcomers, both wide and and limited, as Paramount's Daddy's Home 2 and Fox's Murder on the Orient Express both delivered ahead of expectations and Fox Searchlight's Three Billboards averaged $80,000 per theater over its limited bow. Meanwhile, A24's Lady Bird cracked the weekend top ten despite only playing in 37 theaters. With an estimated $56.6 million this weekend, Thor: Ragnarok dropped just 54% in its second weekend, pushing the film's domestic gross over $211 million after ten days in release. That's enough to best the full domestic gross for both the first Thor film ($181m) and Thor: The Dark World ($206.3m). In fact, Ragnarok is now...

One hundred seventy features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 90th Academy Awards. That’s 25 more than 2016. Assuming they all book their qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles, the members of the documentary branch have just a few more weeks to see as many films as possible and file their votes for the shortlist of 15 to be announced in December. They’re each supposed to watch an assigned list of about 20 films, plus as many more as they can.

Ingrid Bergman ca. early 1940s. Ingrid Bergman movies on TCM: From the artificial 'Gaslight' to the magisterial 'Autumn Sonata' Two days ago, Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” series highlighted the film career of Greta Garbo. Today, Aug. 28, '15, TCM is focusing on another Swedish actress, three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman, who would have turned 100 years old tomorrow. TCM has likely aired most of Bergman's Hollywood films, and at least some of her early Swedish work. As a result, today's only premiere is Fielder Cook's little-seen and little-remembered From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (1973), about two bored kids (Sally Prager, Johnny Doran) who run away from home and end up at New York City's Metropolitan Museum. Obviously, this is no A Night at the Museum – and that's a major plus. Bergman plays an elderly art lover who takes an interest in them; her...

'The greatest love of my life? Oh please. This is not a therapy session'
Geoffrey Rush, 62, was born in Australia. After completing an English degree at the University of Queensland, he went to Paris to study acting at the Jacques Lecoq school, before returning to Australia to work in theatre. His role in the 1996 film Shine won him worldwide recognition, and he became the first Australian-born actor to win an Oscar; he has since had Academy Award nominations for his performances in Shakespeare In Love, Quills and The King's Speech, for which he won a Bafta. His latest film is The Book Thief. He is married with two children and lives in Melbourne.
When were you happiest?
During my Queensland childhood, on the days when I avoided the chlorine-infused shower gauntlet and being corralled into the deep end of the school pool.
What is your greatest fear?

In 1947, Ingrid Bergman dashed off an admiring letter to Italian director Roberto Rossellini. Inspired by his neorealist classics "Rome, Open City" and "Paisan," she suggested he might use her multilingual talents. "I am ready to come and make a film with you," she wrote, as though it were destined all along. To watch the fruit of their collaboration is to believe it was. Together, Bergman and Rossellini produced a tabloid affair, a marriage, three children, and a trilogy of boldly emotional, quasi-experimental films about love among the ruins. "Stromboli" (1950) "Europe '51" (1952), and "Voyage to Italy" (1954), available today in a lushly appointed boxed set from the Criterion Collection, bear the fingerprints of disaster: displaced persons' camps, memories of air raid sirens, abandoned palazzos; volcanic eruptions, catacombs, skulls; collapsing marriages, dead children, communal scorn. "For some time I matured this idea of treating, after the war dramas, this postwar tragedy,"...

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"Iron Man 3"
What's It About? Directed by Shane Black ("Lethal Weapon 2"), the third installment of the "Iron Man" franchise follows Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) as his world is torn apart by the terrorist the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). When Stark's family life is affected by the evil villain, he embarks on a journey to find out who is responsible.
Why We're In: "Iron Man 3," Moviefone's #1 movie of 2013 so far, is different from its two predecessors in that it shows a new, vulnerable side of Tony Stark we'd yet to see. Filled with more serious emotion rarely found in superhero films, this third installment was a refreshing and much needed surprise to the genre.
Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week:
"3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman: 'Stromboli - Terra Di Dio' | 'Europe '51' | 'Journey to Italy'" (Criterion Collection)

When it comes to the coverage of the 66th Cannes Film Festival starting today, mainstream media outlets’ obsession with celebrities seems to be getting the better of them. Playboy Girl Sherlyn Chopra and Ameesha Patel and the likes are being written about with equal enthusiasm (quite often even higher) than the films and people who will actually represent India at Cannes 2013.
Cannes coverage of the Indian press is as ill-informed and misleading as it’s bizarre. Quite often the most talked about titles are those which don’t even feature in the selection while some have market screenings. It’s obvious that the festival coverage by the Indian mainstream media is driven by ignorance and publicists.
Here are some Cannes headlines from mainstream media:-

Treme, Season 3, Episode 5: “I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say”
Written by Eric Overmyer (Story), Lolis Eric Elie and Jen Ralson (Teleplay)
Directed by Alex Hall
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
This week, on Treme: Amy’s family comes to visit, Sofia can’t catch a break, and Terry does a hell of a John Wayne
While this is another solid, entertaining, and inspiring episode of Treme, it has the unfortunate distinction of coming after last week’s installment, which ranks among the series’ best. Its proximity to “The Greatest Love” calls attention to this episode’s, and the show’s, weaknesses, by far the most prominent of which is the number of characters. Many shows find tremendous success with massive, sprawling casts, but what these show do that Treme doesn’t is tie their ensembles together. Each of our main characters has its own set...

This week, on Treme: LP feels the heat, romance is in the air (or it isn’t), and Ladonna’s is the place to be on Sundays

Sure, Woody Harrelson might be hard-drinking but big-hearted Tribute mentor Haymitch Abernathy in "The Hunger Games" to us now, but let's not forget that he was also once charismatic yet most definitely psychopathic mass murderer Mickey Knox in "Natural Born Killers."
Woody gets to bring back a little of that Mickey mojo for his role as Charlie, the temperamental (to say the least) gangster in "Seven Psychopaths." The greatest love in Charlie's life is his pet shih tzu, and when the pooch gets snatched ... well, Charlie gets even more temperamental than usual.

Although directed by Jeon Jae Hong, helmer of the superb and criminally under seen “Beautiful”, whether fairly or not, “Poongsan” will probably be pushed as and seen by many as a Kim Ki Duk film. Having written the script and acting as producer, Kim certainly has his fingerprints all over his protégé’s film, bringing to the table his usual brand of grim drama, cynicism and poetic pain. Offering another take on the effects of the North-South Korean divide, the film stars upcoming actor Yoon Kye Sang (“Lovers of Six Years”, “The Greatest Love”) as a cross-border smuggler, with Kim Gyu Ri (“Portrait of a Beauty”) as his latest package. The film also features Kim Jong Soo (recently in “Sins of Fathers”) amongst its cast, with Japanese star Odagirie Joe following up his role in Kim’s “Dream” with a brief appearance as a North Korean soldier. Yoon Kye Sang plays the titular Poongsan,...

This was the week that Eddie Murphy baled out of the Oscars, leaving the way clear for the some fabric puppets
The big story
Once upon a time the Oscar ceremony was a comforting drone punctuated only by the odd song-and-dance routine and the banshee wailing of overwhelmed best actress award winners. Not any more. Someone, somewhere, decided it had to get "edgy". Last time, they had cool young persons in the shape of James Franco and Anne Hathaway introducing it - and look how that worked out.
The big idea for 2012 was to hire a bona fide Hollywood hotshot, so naturally the word went out for Brett Ratner. Yes, well... he made Rush Hour 2, you know. No sooner had Ratner persuaded his mucker Eddie Murphy to act as the show's host (an inspired choice, we give him that) then he was promptly ejected from his co-producer role after...

It is one of the twin obsessions; Academy awards are the other one. They mean ultimate glory and high for Bollywood filmmakers, stars, and technicians. Bollywood's Cannes obsession has assumed silly dimensions this year and even someone like Shekhar Kapoor, the only filmmaker to successfully graduate from Bollywood to Hollywood, has not remained unaffected by it. He has been shouting from the rooftops about the inclusion of a documentary titled Bollywood- The Greatest Love Stor...

Some of the finest directors have produced masterful triptychs. But do we really need a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean?
It currently seems the only three that interests Hollywood relates to dimensionality. The reverence once extended to the film trilogy is fast diminishing, and although third instalments are due for Transformers, Ong-Bak, Paranormal Activity, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Men in Black, Madagascar, Batman and Iron Man, only the first two have been announced as series finales.
Indeed, with Scre4m, Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides and Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World soon to be followed by fourth entries in the Austin Powers, Mission: Impossible, Underworld and Bourne franchises, the trilogy could soon go the way of the 2D movie, as the synergy-obsessed suits controlling the multi-media conglomerates now owning the major studios adhere to the maxim that familiarity breeds both content and profit.

Ah, Valentine’s Day; the loveliest holiday of them all. But lurking beneath the surface of this fluffy day of sentimentalist cards and over-inflated roses are the same pitfalls and traps that blight 90% of honest relationships. Thank God then, that we have the film universe to draw inspiration and guidance from.
So sit back, get your pencil ready to write notes, and absorb these romantic rules. Soon you too will be able to swish around town with a pretty young thing or an enchanting stud on your arm.

The Disney 50, London
Watching every Disney feature animation ever made wouldn't take a month of Sundays, it would take a year of Sundays, and here's your chance. That's right: to mark the release of the 50th Disney feature, Tangled, the BFI is playing every one of its 49 predecessors – including Bambi, Snow White and Pinocchio – chronologically, every weekend throughout 2011. By the end, you should never again want for the sight of a talking woodland animal, a silver-throated princess, a homicidal stepmother or a dated example of politically incorrect stereotyping. Beyond the all-time classics, there are some intriguing obscurities – anyone remember Make Mine Music, a jazz answer to Fantasia? – while Tangled, a snappy, Pixar-ish spin on Rapunzel, proves there's life in the 74-year-old formula yet. There'll be a preview of it this Sunday to kick off the season, and its directors host a Q&A at the IMAX later this month.

When I was a kid, I devoured the kitschy fun of producer Dino De Laurentiis' films such as the 1976 "King Kong" remake. His name got branded in my feeble mind. When you see his "Dino De Laurentiis Presents" before a trailer, you know that film would be fun!
So the death of the Oscar-winning Italian film producer saddened me. The Italian media was reporting that Laurentiis, who gave the world nearly 500 films including "La Strada," "Serpico," and "Three Days of the Condor" died in Los Angeles. He was 91.
Here's a lengthy but absolutely wonderful snap shot of Laurentiis' life written by John Gallagher from film reference:
One of the most colorful, prolific, and successful producers in the contemporary motion picture business, Dino De Laurentiis has proven his entrepreneurial skills time and again, growing from an independent Italian producer into an international conglomerate. His product, from low-budget neorealist works to multimillion dollar spectacles,...

Italian movie tycoon whose list of credits featured as many disasters as hits
The Italian-born film producer Dino De Laurentiis, who has died aged 91, will perhaps go down in movie history as the last "transatlantic" tycoon. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, producing films on both sides of the ocean, he had as many flops as hits. But De Laurentiis almost always succeeded in staying afloat.
In Rome, he produced Federico Fellini's Oscar-winning La Strada (1954) and the grandiose spectacular War and Peace (1956), but also made The Bible: In the Beginning (1966) and Waterloo (1970), which never recovered their costs. Relocating to the Us, he enjoyed success with Serpico (1973), Death Wish (1974), Three Days of the Condor (1975) and Conan the Barbarian (1982), but had financial disasters including Year of the Dragon (1985) and a failed food emporium, which he opened in New York. Movie Review: Anjaana Anjaani: Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Zayed Khan, Tanvi Azmi and others; Director: Siddharth Anand; Rating: *** – All The Greatest Love Stories Are Between Strangers.
Director Sidharth Anand has come back with his latest offering that provides a unique take on the generic Rom-coms. Anjana Anjani is not your typical ‘Boy Meets Girl’ love story; it is unique in its own way. This is a love story between two strangers who meet under unusual circumstances and manage to find love.
NYC boy Akash (Ranbir Kapoor) and Kiara.

Ingrid Bergman passed away on a day like today, 28 years ago. It was also her 67th birthday.
You have to be one classy human being, to pass away on the day you were born in. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be disrespectful, what I'm trying to say is that this unfortunate coincidence works as a perfect metaphor to encompass the gracefulness, elegance and tact that Ms. Bergman embodied.
Ever so concise, effortlessly direct and charmingly pragmatic, she made a career for herself based on quite economical acting.
Tell me, is there any other actor who never appeared to make a false step onscreen? Even in not so good films like Anastasia and Under Capricorn, there is not a single thing Ms. Bergman did that did not seem authentic.
Disguising her broken heart in Casablanca she makes fools out of Humphrey Bogart, Paul Henreid and us.

After a blockbusting Easter weekend, the UK box office came down to earth with a thump, although Kick-Ass and I Am Love had reasons to celebrate
The comedown
Over the Easter weekend, cinemas bathed in a cascade of cash, as audiences flocked to see a range of films, from Nanny McPhee to Kick-Ass. Seven days later it's a different story, as sunny skies plus a notable lack of strong commercial new titles combined to see box office collapse by more than half. While the 2-4 April period saw the market post its second best weekend of the past 12 months, 9-11 April ranks as only the 41st best out of 52. Families who visited the multiplexes over Easter weekend seem not to have had the appetite for a repeat visit.
The star performer
Despite dropping by 36% from the previous weekend, Kick-Ass finds itself in the surprising position of being the gentlest faller on the chart.

Kick-Ass (15)
(Matthew Vaughn, 2010, Us/UK) Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloë Moretz. 118 mins
Now that the likes of Batman and Spider-Man are risk-averse, broad-spectrum cash juggernauts, it's refreshing to see a comic-book movie that doesn't play by the rules. Like a spoilt brat, this is foul-mouthed, hyperactive, extremely violent, and all the better for it. And despite dealing with the pitfalls of becoming a real-life vigilante (with no super-powers), it successfully segues from teen loser comedy to full-on action fantasy without losing its stride, just as it straddles the divide between fan-friendly cult material and mainstream crowd-pleaser.
Clash Of The Titans 3D (12A)
(Louis Leterrier, 2010, Us) Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson. 106 mins
So much state-of-the-art technology and A-list talent has been thrown at this sword-and-sandals epic, some of it is bound to stick. And if the 3D looks like a hurried afterthought and the story a bit of a Greek salad, there's always another giant scorpion,...

The greatest love experiment on television is coming to the end of another season. Last night the "Women Tell All" special aired as this week’s installment of ABC's "The Bachelor." Next week Jake will wrap it all up with the most dramatic final rose ceremony ever! I don’t know about you, but with the exception of about 10 jaw-dropping, bombastic minutes, I was a little bored. There was an awful lot of recapping. I feel like it was a big flashback dream and I invested a lot of time for very little payback. That said, I love this show, and whatever...
