SAD SERVUß TO WILLI FORST
J. Steed9 October 1999
This last film of director Willi Forst is his melancholy view on a modernizing Vienna and his longing for a more gracious world. He mocks the tourist industry in the Vienna-in-24-hours sequence including a reference to Carol Reed's "The Third Man". There are some other nice ideas in the script, but most of them take too long and/or are not elaborated well-enough; as a whole the writing is mediocre. Fortunately Forst had a fine cast that makes the best of things, although Adrian Hoven's presence is non-descript.

More importantly the film misses the old Schwung, the Forst style, the former light touch of Forst. It is a very uneasy film of a tired and disillusioned man who had lost interest and in whom the audiences had lost any interest. As Forst himself said after completing this film: my style is not wanted anymore, it is better to go than to be asked to leave. The film is a sad Servuß of a very fine director.

Vienna, (not the) city of my dreams

Warning: Spoilers
I guess they liked the final quote of the movie so much that they simply took it as the film's title as well. It sounds like a travel documentary on Vienna. This film from 1957 (which is also 57 years old now) is fairly forgettable, however. Vienna is not really in the focus and none of the characters are really interesting enough to keep my attention. Same goes for the story. This one was written and directed by Willi Forst based on Berlin-born Hans Rameau's novel, Forst's last work in fact although he lived for over 20 years afterward still. Rameau actually worked on the scripts of several movies that scored multiple Academy Award nominations in the 1940s.

The cast includes some of Germany's acting elite at that point: Adrian Hoven, Hans Holt and Paul Hörbiger. The latter worked on several Vienna-fanboy films during his career. This is a very loud movie. The characters are almost all over the top and you will not find any subtlety. All style, little substance. The humor was very different back then and the way it is delivered, there is sadly nothing really funny about it. Not recommended. The only thing I occasionally enjoyed was the classical music.
