Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson begin their excellent adventures in earnest: here’s our Doctor Who Space Babies spoiler-filled review.
Final warning: this review contains spoilers.
For those of us who grew up in the era of wobbly monsters, episodes of Doctor Who afforded one set and a bit of studio time, and the same corridor shot from multiple angles, this new era of the show still takes a little getting used to. To see Doctor Who able to segue into a side moment where there are convincing-looking dinosaurs roaming and for it not even to be the main thrust of the story is quite something really.
But here we are, and all power to it. I’m betting a pound that the butterfly effect at the start comes back towards the end of the series, though.

Warning: this Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
In the parlance of the times, we are so back.
After the three triumphant Tennant/Tate specials, I’ll confess that “The Church on Ruby Road” left me feeling slightly apprehensive. While an effective showcase for Ncuti Gatwa’s charisma, as a forecast for the new era I found it to be overly frenetic, bordering on slapdash. Christmas specials are always going to be broader affairs, but this one frequently felt like a first draft held together with little more than the raw enthusiasm of all involved.
Happily, “Space Babies” is more solid in every respect. It’s well structured, economical and – crucially – very entertaining. And while I doubt it will be topping many all-time favourite lists, that’s fine, because that’s not really its job.

In Norman Taurog's 1963 film "It Happened at the World's Fair," Elvis Presley plays a crop-duster pilot named Mike whose crop-dusting plane was just repossessed by the local sheriff. While hitchhiking home, wondering how he'll get the money to buy back his plane, Mike comes upon the Seattle World's Fair. There, he instantly becomes smitten with a local nurse named Diane Warren (not to be confused with songwriter Diane Warren) played by Joan O'Brien.
To manufacture a reason to see the Fair's nurse, Mike pulls an 11-year-old boy out of the crowd and offers to pay the kid a quarter in exchange for a really, really hard kick to the shin. The kid is thrilled to have the money and dutifully thwacks the stranger. As Mike limps away, the kid mutters to himself "Adults. They're all nuts." The unnamed character was played by an uncredited Kurt Russell making his feature film debut.

There are always a lot of expectations going into a "Doctor Who" Christmas special, and that goes double for "The Church of Ruby Road." Whereas some Christmas specials have had the task of introducing a new Doctor, and other specials have had to introduce a new companion, this is the first in the show's history to introduce both Doctor and companion at the same time. And how does it do? Well, it mostly does fine. So far, Millie Gibson's been delightful as the clumsy Ruby Sunday, and Ncuti Gatwa is a lot of fun as the energetic, optimistic new Doctor.
If there is a downside to this episode, it's once again the villain. The bad luck goblins that Ruby and the Doctor face off against this episode are insanely silly, even by "Doctor Who" standards. It's not a dealbreaker since they're clearly not the episode's main focus, but for...

Garth Brooks has taken his country music to Las Vegas and isn’t going anywhere else any time soon.
Back in May, the “Friends in Low Places” singer began his concert residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and will be there until December 16. He’ll be taking a break for a few months after but is scheduled to return to the Colosseum on April 18 next year.
Last week, Brooks performed at the opening of his new bar in Nashville, Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk.
“This town has been amazing to me,” Brooks said during his performance in Nashville. “When this [opportunity] popped up, the thought was, does Garth Brooks owe Nashville? You bet Garth Brooks owes Nashville.”
He then went on to explain the reason he named his bar after his hit song.

Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Discovery has meticulously remastered Max Fleischer’s treasured set of 17 animated Superman shorts from the original 35mm source elements. Max Fleischer’s Superman 1941-1943 will be available to purchase Digitally on HD and on Blu-ray May 16, 2023.
Superman made his comic book debut in 1938, appearing in Action Comics #1, and the Man of Steel’s popularity grew with his subsequent radio program. Max Fleischer gave the world’s first Super Hero his initial animated spotlight, producing 17 theatrical animated shorts from September 1941 to July 1943 that further elevated the character’s profile, and added many significant aspects to his canon – including coining many of Superman’s patented catchphrases and attributes.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s advanced remastering process began with a 4K, 16-bit scan of Fleischer’s original 35mm successive exposure negative. Staying true to the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.37-to-1, the highest quality raw image was then scanned and...

In 2005, Steven Moffat wouldn’t have been as successful a Doctor Who showrunner as Russell T. Davies. The two are very different writers, with Moffat simultaneously introverted and romantic in comparison to Davies’ passionate tenure’s underlying cynicism. The latter was much better suited to introducing the show to a wider audience, and the former was better at interrogating the show’s tropes and characters (much easier to do if you’re going second). The two are in conversation with each other, consciously or not. Moffat started off one of his storylines towards the end of Davies’ final series.
Indeed, Moffat’s time on the show is in conversation with the entire history of Doctor Who, asking fundamental questions about the character’s identity, ethics and flaws, going right back to the character’s beginnings (near the beginning and end of his first incarnation) and asserting the importance of fear...

Jack Ging, the familiar character actor who recurred on such series as Tales of Wells Fargo, Mannix, Riptide and The A-Team and appeared in three films opposite Clint Eastwood, has died. He was 90.
Ging died Friday of natural causes at his home in La Quinta, California, his wife, Apache Ging, told The Hollywood Reporter.
In rare starring turns, Ging played the love interest of Diane Baker’s character in a remake of Tess of the Storm Country (1960), a soldier and reluctant hero in the waning days of the Korean War in the drama Sniper’s Ridge (1961) and a clinical psychiatrist on the 1962-64 NBC medical series The Eleventh Hour.

The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 1 Review
The Time Traveler’s Wife, HBO’s new miniseries adaptation based on Audrey Niffenegger’s novel of the same name, is taking full advantage of the extended time serialized television offers in regards to telling a story involving multiple timelines. The opening episode assumes viewers have not read the novel or seen the previous movie adaptation, but it makes the jumps in time easier to follow if you have the background of either or both. This miniseries is not for people who have already made their mind up to hate the premise but it’s for the readers of the novel who wanted more character development from the movie.
Henry DeTamble (Theo James) is the time traveler in the title. His powers of time travel are limited to his actual lifespan, give or take a few years.

Amy Pond and Rory Williams are perhaps the most beloved companions the Doctor ever had. Their evolution on screen in terms of character development is among the most extensive character evolutions of the show. For those that haven’t met the Ponds, let’s discuss who they are and how exactly they have evolved in the “Doctor Who” series.
Who Are Amy Pond and Rory Williams?
Amy Pond and Rory Williams, collectively known in the series as The Ponds, were the companions and in-laws to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Though they’re husband and wife, they’re referred to as The Ponds due to Rory’s timid personality compared to Amy’s confidence and decisiveness — hence the fans’ joke that Rory should’ve taken Amy’s last name.
Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, though appearing later in the show, after the Ponds, stated on an occasion that there would...

Tons of British actors have been in the running for Oscars over the years. And of course there have been countless British actors who have made their way through “Doctor Who” since the sci-fi series was revived in 2005. So it makes sense that the Venn diagram would include some overlap. But it’s still significant that three of this year’s four acting races at the Oscars could be won by “Doctor Who” alums: Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman“), Olivia Colman (“The Father”) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah“).
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Mulligan is the current front-runner to win the Best Actress Oscar for her “Promising” role as a former med student exacting revenge on abusive men. But in 2007, at age 22 — a couple of years before her breakthrough performance in “An Education” made her an international household name — she starred in the...

Doctor Who fans will know that the popular sci-fi series isn’t particularly known for its adherence to the in-universe continuity. And there’ve been many, many instances where a new plot development undermined what had already been established.
This is mostly due to the fact that a lot of people have worked on the property over the years. In fact, as most Whovians would tell you, the transition from one showrunner to the next isn’t always smooth sailing. On that note, an eagle-eyed fan has now discovered that “The Eleventh Hour,” Steven Moffat’s first episode as executive producer, contains a huge plot hole relating to the Atraxi invasion.
Of course, it’s worth noting that the episode in question is one of the most acclaimed and well-known stories in the series. After all, it featured the debut of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. The young actor...

‘The truth is it never goes away’ says David Tennant. ‘It’s 15 years since I did it and I’m here today!’ He’s talking, of course, about Doctor Who. To mark the show’s arrival in the Us on streaming service HBO Max, Tennant united for an online panel with fellow Doctors Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker to reminisce about their respective tenures in the Tardis.
Speaking from their UK homes to IGN’s Terri Schwarz, Tennant and Smith spoke about their experiences handing over the role, while Whittaker gave her advice to whoever would take up the mantle next. She told the eventual next-in-line (whoever they may be) that the pressure of the show’s history needs to be forgotten and the newcomer isn’t expected to repeat what’s been done before, only to continue to make it different and new.

Michael Moore interrupted hosting duties at his 15th annual Traverse City Film Festival in Michigan to make a bold suggestion about the 2020 presidential race: He urged former first lady Michelle Obama to jump into the ring and predicted that if she did, she would trounce Donald Trump.
“She would beat him. She would crush him,” Moore told Deadline on Thursday morning, just before he stepped onstage for a panel at the festival and after suggesting the same thing Wednesday to Brian Williams on MSNBC’s The Eleventh Hour following the Democratic debate in Detroit. “It’s clear that Michelle Obama is a beloved person. I’ve seen one or two polls that show her as the most-loved American. And why wouldn’t we run a person like that? The stakes are so high — why would we risk anything else?”

George M. Lehr, associate producer on such classic TV series as “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and “Police Woman,” and later a professor at USC’s School of Cinema & Television, died March 14, in Erie, Pa., after a short illness. He was 87.
Lehr worked on television shows at MGM, 20th Century-Fox and Columbia for more than 30 years. As Doctor Who changes its supporting cast every week, it means the hit BBC show can have a revolving door of famous actors and actresses jump aboard the series for one episode and then jump off again. In particular, the show’s been home to many up-and-coming stars who went on to be major Hollywood names. Just a few who spring to mind include Andrew Garfield, Carey Mulligan and Felicity Jones.

The Tardis just about lands. Frazzled, but intact. Inside, for the first time since last Christmas, we see Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, stepping through a massive collection of bras, knocking over make-up containers and a pile of thick, miserable, monthly fashion magazines. She presses stop on the DVD, frustrated that she won’t get through her regular evening viewing of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Even actors engage in a bit of cosplay every now and again, and in this throwback photo that’s sure to excite Doctor Who fans, Karen Gillan has revealed that she once cosplayed as her own character, Amy Pond. The actress starred opposite Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor from 2010-2013 and it’s fair to say her most famous outfit on the show was the police officer kissogram costume she wore in her first appearance in “The Eleventh Hour.”
Gillan donned the outfit again for a photo shoot in her native Scotland recently, as you can see her in the photo below dressed alongside someone decked out in Eleven’s tweeds and bow tie, standing in front of a real-life Police Box that can be found on the streets of Glasgow (one of the few that are still dotted around the UK).

Should people completely new to Doctor Who really start right from the beginning, with the first episode originally aired in 1963? It might initially seem an overly obvious suggestion, but – hey – it works. One big reason is that, theoretically, viewers won’t miss any references, says CultBox. The story starts innocuously, with a schoolgirl who, when heading home, makes her way to a junkyard with her teachers in pursuit.

Kristin Kreuk is coming home.
The former “Smallville” and “Beauty and the Beast” star will return to The CW this summer, as the network has acquired the U.S. rights to the 10-episode Canadian legal drama “Burden of Truth” from Entertainment One. Created by Brad Simpson, the series is the latest addition to The CW’s growing slate of original programming for the summer 2018 season.
“Burden of Truth,” which premiered in January on the CBC, stars Kreuk as a big city lawyer who returns to her hometown to take on what she thinks is a simple case, only to find herself in a fight for justice for a group of sick girls. The series also stars Peter Mooney (“Rookie Blue”), Alex Carter (“NCIS”), Benjamin Ayres (“Saving Hope”), Nicola Correia-Damude (“Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments”), Meegwun Fairbrother (“Hemlock Grove”) and newcomer Star Slade.

Season 5 is a hugely important one in Doctor Who history as it acted as an effective reboot of the series. Both showrunner Russell T. Davies and leading man David Tennant had gone, leaving incoming writer Steven Moffat and star Matt Smith to take the reigns. However, it turns out that it could have been very different, as Moffat worked out an alternate idea for the season involving Tennant.
In a fascinating, multi-part interview with The Fan Show (available on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel), Steven Moffat explained that the Tenth Doctor actor almost decided to reverse his exit from the show and remain on board for just one more season. In response, the writer came up with a new plan.
“Well, David was just going through the – now, to me, very familiar – angst about leaving. Piers Wenger [former executive producer] and I went to talk to David and I ran him through...

Alex's series looking back at the film careers of actors who've played the Doctor finishes with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi...

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

We here at ComicMix celebrate all manner of pop culture from today’s obvious hits to the arcane wonders of yesteryear. every now and then we get a notice about something that seems just outside our realm of interest but there’s a thing or two that grabs us. Something like an unaired pilot to the legendary Dr. Kildare series is one of those things. Not only that, but the series gave us Richard Chamberlain as a star (long before he was resurrected for Leverage). The show not only boasted an impressive guest cast, as noted below but it featured some of the best writers working in television including a pre-Star Trek Gene Roddenberry. The handsome actor best known for playing son Robbie Douglas on My Three Sons has died. Also a composer and musician, Don Grady (far right) was 68 years old and had been battling cancer.
A native of San Diego, Grady was cast as a young Mouseketeer on the classic kids' afternoon show, The Mickey Mouse Club. After that, he appeared on several TV shows of the day like Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, Wagon Train, The Rifleman, and The Eleventh Hour.
He was then cast as the middle brother, Robbie Douglas, on My Three Sons. Movie star Fred MacMurray played his dad with Stanley Livingston and Tim Considine (another Mickey Mouse Club vet) playing his younger and older brothers respectively. I Love Lucy's William Frawley rounded out the cast as maternal grandfather "Bub" O'Casey.

Doctor Who! Ashes To Ashes! Jonathan Creek! The Pacific! More Doctor Who! How's this for a terrific week for films and shows on UK TV?
We're all sat, antsy, pouring over stills and looping seconds' worth of trailers and preview snippets heralding the new Doctor into our lives.
The build up of anticipation continues and whether the offering up of alternate, past Who Doctors makes the ever-shortening wait for the new any less stinging, or eases the itch a bit, is a personal matter. But, we'll take all the Who we can get, thank you.
The Doctor-ful weekend starts today, and we think it must be the most Who-filled Easter we've seen. We'll get right to the schedules of all things Time Lordish, and the other great programmes guaranteed to make you smile, laugh - or get that puzzled expression that looks so good on you - over the next few days.
