Three-fourth of his 88-year-long life was spent in acting and of these, six and a half decades, over half, had Dev Anand playing the lead (romantic) role, even as his peers and even several of his leading ladies had moved on or out. In the process, Dev Anand ended up being paired against at least three generations of heroines, if not four, as he transitioned from his early days where his female co-lead was the bigger star to a time when most actresses were keen on working with him as he sauntered from success to success with that charming demeanour and the winning smile.
While most of his early heroines, say, Kamla Kotnis, who was cast against him in his debut “Hum Ek Hai” (1946), Kamini Kaushal, the heroine of his first hit “Ziddi” (1948), Khursheed Bano or Nimmi or Shakila will only be familiar to hardcore film buffs or movie historians,...

In his youth, he had gone from his home in Gurdaspur to Amritsar to get medicines for his ailing mother. To quench his thirst, he ordered a glass of sugarcane juice from a stall near the Golden Temple. When the vendor took a closer look at him, he exclaimed that Dev Anand had the sun on his forehead, foretelling greatness.
The prediction did come true Dev Anand did become a star that burnt bright across an over six-decade-long career.
With his undeniable charm, fast diction, the slight lopsided gait, trademark nodding to add emphasis, the winning winsome smile, and the flamboyant sartorial style, Dev Anand sparkled in a career that began before Independence and lasted into the second decade of the 21st century.

If India ever had a star, it was Dev Anand. He was the mould in which subsequent generations of stars were cast. Dev Anand was born Dharamdev on September 26, 1923, in the Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a successful advocate and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Dev, the third of four brothers, graduated with English Honours from Government College, Lahore. He moved over to Bombay to join his older brother Chetan, who was trying to get a break in films.
Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.

Starring Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi, Sanjay Mishra, Ileana d’Cruz, Esha Gupta, Vidyut Jamwal
Directed by Milan Luthria
If you are looking for a film that is unintentionally funny because it takes itself so seriously you would think the end-result would be a heist film on a par with Vijay Anand’s Jewel Thief or at least Milan Luthria’s Kachche Dhaage, then look again.
This is no Oceans 11. Baadshaho is a class apart. Seldom have I come cross a screenplay so absurd and bombastic it qualifies among the most deplorably written feasts of fatuousness in recent times. Making it worse are the performance. So pretentious and hammy are the actors it would be an insult to good taste to call them actors.
Topping the list of performing travesties is Ileana D’Cruz. Playing what looks like a Gayatri Devi lookalike she gives what could possibly rank among the...

Tom Sizemore and William Forsythe star in Kamal Ahmed's crime thriller Laugh Killer Laugh. TwitchFilm has an exclusive clip to share with you, which you can watch below, as well as the trailer for further reference. A Jewel thief named Frank Stone is a very deeply disturbed, anti social, milquetoast who finds no joy or humor in anything - until he awakens from a deep coma with a changed personality. I love that the dialogue in this clip sounds like it was taken from the Little Boys Lexicon of Gangster Grammar. You can catch Laugh Killer Laugh in cinemas, and on VOD and iTunes on April 24th. ...

For many years I was the head of film programming for the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles, a non-profit film group that currently runs the Egyptian and Aero Theatres. As part of my job I tried to keep my finger to the pulse of national cinemas from around the globe, both new and old, by combing through festival catalogues, talking to other programmers and watching as many movies as I could get my hands on (much of these in the old VHS days!)
In the 1990s and early 2000s I saw the rediscovery of some amazing bodies of world cinema such as Italian Horror and Giallo Cinema from the 1960s & 1970s by directors like Mario Bava and Dario Argento, and Japanese Outlaw Cinema from the same period by hard-hitting genre filmmakers like Kinji Fukasaku, Seijun Suzuki and Kihachi Okamoto. For his role in the upcoming romantic thriller Lootera, Ranveer Singh has really worked hard to get his character perfect for the film. The film’s story is inspired from O. Henry’s “The Last Leaf” and is the uplifting story of two lovers through a turbulent but epic romance. Set in 1953, Ranveer plays a young broody archaeologist called Varun Shrivastav and the character is quite the departure from his earlier boy next door roles ala Band Baaja Baarat.
As part of his research for the film, Ranveer attended workshops to learn the art of emoting with his eyes and he learned from one of the best – Dev Anand. The legendary Dev Anand was known in his times for his expressive eyes. Director Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan) made Ranveer watch movies like Guide, Heera Panna and Jewel Thief.

Mumbai, Aug 11: Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan is the latest to be voted out of popular dance reality show "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5".
The actor, along with his choreographer Kunjan, tried to put his best foot forward by trying various dance forms like Bollywood, tango and salsa.
One of his impressive acts was when he dressed up like yesteryear dancing diva Vyjayanthimala and grooved to popular song "Hoton mein aisi baat" from 1967 film "Jewel Thief".

Before I came to write about the great world of Bollywood, I was a professional ballet dancer for many years. It was my first love. So when I discovered Bollywood, the dance sequences were one of the things that made me fall in love with the genre. Since I am a dancer, one of my all time favorite shows is the reality dance program, So You Think You Can Dance (Sytycd) on Fox network here in the Us. You can imagine how excited I was when I first saw a Bollywood number on the show in Season 4. I was ecstatic and so it seems was the audience. Since then the Bollywood numbers have thrilled audiences and I hear will be seen on the 9th season, which is airing now on Wednesday nights. A couple of weeks ago I got the amazing opportunity to chat with the choreographer behind those great Bollywood numbers,...

Dev Anand lives again! In the soon-to-start-shooting 60-crore rupees action-adventure caper Lootera Ranveer Singh would be shown to woo Sonakshi Sinha with some of Dev Anand's choicest numbers including 'Khoya Khoya Chand' (Kala Bazar), 'Tere Mere Sapne' (Guide) and 'Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara' (Jewel Thief) . And no cover versions, please. Producer Madhu Mantena who was associated with HMV-Saregama will apply for the rights of number Dev Anand melodies. These, say a source, would not be applied to the film in any random fashion. The songs would be filmed keeping the mood and tempo and flavour of the original sequences, and no tampering the core of the compositions or their screen interpretations at all. Apparently director Vikramaditya Motwane would shoot the songs in black-and-white. Ranveer a huge Dev Anand fan would apparently be shown as a Dev Anand fan in the film, sporting the same hairstyle,...

Popular Bollywood matinee idol, producer and film-maker
The Indian actor, producer and film-maker Dev Anand, who has died aged 88, was the first and longest serving matinee idol of Bollywood cinema. The pinnacle of his career came with Guide (1965), a film based on Rk Narayan's novel, in which Dev played the male lead opposite the classical Indian dancer turned actor Waheeda Rehman. Dev's talented younger brother Vijay directed it. During the golden age of Indian cinema, in the 1950s and 1960s, Dev, along with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, formed the trio of stars who dominated the silver screen. Dev's urbanity and quirky mannerisms made him especially popular among the young and women.
He was born in undivided India at Gurdaspur, in the Punjab region. His father, Pishorimal Anand, was a leading lawyer. After graduating from the prestigious Government College, in Lahore, Dev tried and failed to enter the Royal Indian Navy.
