brilliant and bittersweet short play
didi-516 May 2009
Sadly buried in the archives now, this play of John Mortimer's from the series 'Thirty Minute Theatre' (shown recently at the BFI) really is something special. Not only was it one of the first TV productions to really tackle gay issues, it did it in a way which didn't cause an audience to laugh. You can well imagine Mr and Mrs Britain being a little shocked in the early 70s with the odd quartet in the Bermondsey house at Christmas and their tangled relationships!

One really good thing about viewing TV plays from the past are the top-notch casts who worked on the box then - here we have Dinsdale Landen, Edward Fox, Rosemary Leach, and Sharon Duce, who are all excellent and inhabit their characters perfectly. This play is also extremely touching in places and does its (at the time) difficult subject justice. I only wish this and other similar plays were more widely available for new viewers to see.
