Put this show on DVD
vdogirish25 April 2006
The Streets of San Fransisco is an excellent show which needs to be put on DVD very soon. Including all seasons and the pilot episode. Also release other Quinn Martin shows on DVD. Some of the show include Cannon, Barnaby Jones,The FBI, and The Fugitive. Quinn Martin is the only producer to have a show on the air for over 20 years straight. Jerry Bruckheimer is the only person to match the amount of shows on the air at one time. Aaron Spelling is also another producer to have multiple shows on the air. Quinn Martin's shows are unique. They all follow a very specific format. Its a shame these shows are not available on DVD right now. Keep recommending to put Quinn Martin's shows on DVD. They are a Masterpiece.

A moderately entertaining first episode--but the ending is really dumb.

This is the pilot for the TV series "The Streets of San Francisco". The program is a moderately entertaining look at the series--decent but not so outstanding that you would be hooked on the show. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as so often pilots are little like the later series--so perhaps the show will get a lot better.

The show begins with the body of a young woman being discovered in the water near the Golden Gate Bridge. However, this lady didn't jump--someone dumped her in the river further towards the city. And, she was already dead before she hit the water. The body, oddly, has a necklace on it--a necklace with a laminated business card for a lawyer (Robert Wagner). When the lawyer is called in to identify the body, he admits to knowing her and gives the police officers (Michael Douglas and Karl Malden) the name of the girl. However, he's evasive and obviously knows more about the case--and the police know this when they catch him in some of his lies. However, it's early on in the show and you know there is MUCH more to it than this. Plus, he IS a lawyer and lying isn't exactly unusual for the profession!

The good of the series is Karl Malden. He was a fine actor and here he seems quite at home as a detective. Plus, the rapport between him and Douglas was pretty good for a first episode. But, the show definitely suffers later in the episode when a LOT of weird mumbo-jumbo occurs--and the show definitely goes off the deep end! In fact, the show looks a bit more like "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" than "The Streets of San Francisco"!! It's totally out of place and a bit dumb. Too bad--maybe they'll get better.

By the way, I did think it was a bit interesting that Andrew Duggan appeared in this pilot, as he also was in the pilot for another cop show, "Hawaii Five-O".

Standard TV fare pilot

Warning: Spoilers
Karl Malden and Michael Douglas-- two actors not very associated with doing weekly TV shows teamed up and made this memorable series for four years. This pilot is well done enough. Strapping Kim Darby is in it as the tragically dead victim found afloat and we see her live and beautiful in flashback. ( Darby's great scenes appear to be a show in themselves!) A few other talented familiar TV show faces also dot the scenery of this pilot. But unfortunately despite Darby it is all pretty standard and nothing that that special. It is the time it is made in. 1972 was not a magical time--the 60s were over. America had gone fragmentary over its war with North Vietnamese mass-murderer Ho Chi Minh. (see my reviews) and the result was a partially broken down/less amazing American society by 1972. That is what the show is-- a product of America just immedlately after the magic has disappeared with the end of the 60s. Had this been made in 1967 it definitely would have been much better.

Oh sure...this one was good.

You usually think about 'Mannix', 'Kojak' or 'Starsky and Hutch' whenever '70s cop shows are mentioned. This one gets overlooked-and it's a shame. Check out this cast-Karl Malden, Mike Douglas And Robert Wagner, what's not to like? And Mr C from Happy Days and Mako, too!

It's well acted, well done if somewhat dated-dig all those sideys and bellbottems-worth a looksee if you get the shot.

excellent story!

This pilot episode is great, I remember watching it when was young and I could'nt forget it.The story is about two detectives from the San Francisco homicide department who are assigned to a case when a girl's body washes ashore beneath the Golden Gate bridge. She was killed and the story is played out in a lot of flashback scenes to show her last days. The cast is tremendous with Kim Darby as the victim and Robert Wagner as the attorney who dated her before she died. The suspects are the attorney and some stranger who is posing as her uncle. There is a fearful somewhat spooky sequence when the uncle appears .The real star is the city itself with great background shots. This is well done and some fine acting by the cast.Highly recommended

Warning: Spoilers
Okay you know how they caught the killer? He said he drove home from the north bay around midnight. But there was a 25 car pileup and the bridge was closed from 10-1. Oh really?

Not a bad TV series

I remember watching this show as a child, and when I got older I was surprised how good of a show it was. I guess at any age one can spot good programing. Wasn't there someone before Michael Douglas on the show? (ie that guy from Battalstar) Malden, and Douglas, have been very good actors, I do not recall many A actors on T V let alone 2. Watching a rerun I saw Arnold as a crazy weight lifter, wow. 10/10

The Streets of San Fransisco
cdm1721918 April 2007
Just an FYI. Karl Maldon and Michael Douglas were the original's in the TV show The Streets of San Fransisco. Richard Hatch replaced Michael Douglas when Michael left the show. Richard Hatch was also in Battlestar Galactica. He played Captain Apollo, the one who adopted that cute little boy. I love both shows. So I'm trying to figure out how many seasons The Streets of San Fransisco aired on TV. I just found the first season, 1st volume in the store and bought it. I'm wondering how many I need to save up for. I purchased the entire seasons of Battlestar Galactica and have enjoyed both that and The Streets of San Fransisco. I can't wait for more of The Streets of San Fransisco to come out. Hopefully they won't wait too long.
