Move Over John Wick: Adilkhan Yerzhanov Unleashes A Bloody Tale Of Vengeance In His Latest Feature
Bleak, bloody, and bullet-riddled, the latest from prolific Kazakh filmmaker Adilkhan Yerzhanov plunges viewers into a godless, barren landscape in which hope is a worthless form of currency. Blending together the scorched earth chaos of Mad Max with the swagger of Golden Age westerns, and dashed with Nicolas Winding Refn styled nihilism, Steppenwolf is an existential genre exercise the probes deeper concerns about humanity below the surface. But despite its gripping execution, Yerzhanov’s philosophical musings struggle to resonate amidst the film’s endless body count.

The rather prolific Adilkhan Yerzhanov (15 features in 12 years) has already established his own style, by including elements of US b-movies, Western, action and violence, and a rather bleak sense of humor that make his movies quite entertaining. “Steppenwolf” continues in the same path, in a pure genre film that is inspired by the 1956 John Ford movie, “The Searchers”.

There is a certain inevitability about a film inspired by Hermann Hesse’s novel “Steppenwolf,” first published in German in 1927, and two famous Westerns of the 1950s — John Ford’s “The Searchers,” and Howard Hawks’ “Red River.” The film, also called “Steppenwolf,” has its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Big Screen Competition section. Its teaser debuts on Variety exclusively (below).
In acclaimed Kazakh director Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s latest film, two characters who are essentially loners existing outside of the usual moral boundaries of the world come together united in a common task: to save a small boy who has gone missing.
Yerzhanov takes universal themes from Hesse’s novel and the later Hollywood Westerns, to plumb the depths of where man’s spirituality disappears into the depths of his animal origins. To explore what he calls a story of “two different heroes, two opposing characters, who...

An ensemble of gifted actors effectively play against type in Michael Shannon’s quietly powerful directing debut, none more so than Judy Greer, outwardly numbed by sorrow but raw inside as a mother whose son shot and killed three high school classmates. While the subject matter inevitably invites comparison with Mass, that well-received 2021 chamber piece — also a first feature by an actor, Fran Kranz — kept its focus tight on two sets of parents on either side of a similar tragedy. Eric Larue casts a wider gaze, taking in the broader community and the religious leaders fumbling or manipulating the conversation about healing.
Shannon’s deep roots in Chicago theater are evident in his choice of material and his success at assembling a first-rate cast — uncommonly strong across the board for a modestly scaled indie like this.

Bob Rice, who teamed with Journey to release a groundbreaking rock music video game and represented top-notch composers like Steve Ouimette, Sascha Dikiciyan and Inon Zur in the industry, has died. He was 79.
Rice died Wednesday night of Copd at an assisted living facility in Santa Clara, California, publicist Greg O’Connor-Read told The Hollywood Reporter.
Rice created and executive produced what was perhaps the first rock video game, “Journey Escape.” Released by Data Age in 1982 for the Atari 2600 console and narrated by Casey Kasem, it featured band members Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Steve Smith as primitive digitized avatars.
Gamers were tasked in the instructions with guiding each musician “past hordes of Love-Crazed Groupies, Sneaky Photographers and Shifty-eyed Promoters to the safety of the Journey Escape Vehicle in time to make the next concert. Your mighty manager and loyal roadies are there to help, but the escape is up to you!

On January 1, 2022, A.A. Milne's 1926 children's novel "Winnie-the-Pooh" lapsed into the public domain. Filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield immediately took the opportunity to turn the notoriously gentle fable about a talking stuffed bear into a brutal, gory, low-budget horror movie. In his film, the young Christopher Robin (Nikolai Leon) has returned to his childhood home in the 100-Acre Wood after growing up. Pooh (Craig David Dowsett) and Piglet (Chris Cordell), in his absence, were forced to eat Eeyore and grew into human-hating, murderous behemoths. The two creatures spend the bulk of the movie stalking around a remote vacation home murdering its tenants.
The film is just as stupid as it sounds, but its premise was wild enough that crowds gathered out of curiosity. Made for a mere $100,000, "Blood and Honey" grossed $5.2 million worldwide. Not too shabby for a cheap, crude horror flick. In its opening weekend, the film garnered just enough excitement...

The oversized contribution Chicago has made and continues to make to the American entertainment landscape comes in no small part from its vibrant and varied theater scene. With well over 200 theaters, from small stages featuring intimate fare to larger houses sending major productions to Broadway and beyond, it’s difficult to find any American film or television series that doesn’t have roots that trace back to Windy City stages.
The Steppenwolf Theater Company is one where heavy-hitters John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf and Gary Sinise forged their craft early in their storied careers. Playwright and actor Tracy Letts premiered his Pulitzer Prize-winning “August: Osage County” at Steppenwolf in 2007.
“It’s a lot easier to produce good theater in Chicago than in many other places,” Malkovich told Roger Ebert back in 1984 and that still applies today. “You can always get a few people together and put on a play.”

In 1992 the presidential race came down to three main candidates: the Republican incumbent, President George H.W. Bush, Democrat Bill Clinton, and Independent Ross Perot. But they weren’t the only contenders for the office. Terence Alan Smith also campaigned—as “America’s first drag queen for president.”
Smith, under his drag name Joan Jett Blakk, ran as the nominee of the Queer Nation Party on a platform of universal health care, defunding police and the military, and increased funding for education.
“Smith championed policies that are mainstream today,” writes Whitney Skauge, director of the Oscar-contending short documentary The Beauty President, which recounts Smith’s 1992 bid. “Against a social and political environment of homophobia in the 1990s, it was a defiant act of bravery for Smith to be an openly gay Black man, dressed in full drag, running for the highest seat in government.”

Producers Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle have optioned Hermann Hesse’s “Demian” and plan to adapt the novel into a feature film. Nick Kreiss (“Afraid”) has penned a screenplay with cinematographer Andre Lascaris (“About Alex”) and under the supervision of the Hesse estate.
The book was a bestseller in the U.S. and its story of spiritual enlightenment and self-discovery resonated first with readers in the post-World War I period and then later with members of the American counterculture of the 1960s, who embraced the novel yet again. It found favor with the likes of Timothy Leary and Colin Wilson, who became enthusiastic boosters of the Hesse canon. Kopeloff thinks the time is ripe for a new generation to rediscover “Demian.”
“We’re living in a digital age, where a lot of our lives are dictated by social media,” he says. “There’s an externalization of identity. This story is a fresh contrast.

Armie Hammer has withdrawn from the planned 2022 Broadway production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes, producers confirmed today. The news is the latest hit to Hammer’s career in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations and an LAPD rape investigation.
“I have loved every single second of working on The Minutes with the family I made from Steppenwolf. But right now I need to focus on myself and my health for the sake of my family. Consequently, I will not be returning to Broadway with the production,” Hammer said in a statement.
The production team, led by producer Jeffrey Richards, released the following statement: “Armie remains a valued colleague to all of us who have worked with him onstage and offstage on The Minutes. We wish only the best for him and respect his decision.”

Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre has indefinitely postponed its world premiere stage adaptation of the 2005 George Clooney-co-written film Good Night, and Good Luck, a project that had generated considerable interest on Broadway.
Steppenwolf announced yesterday that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the theater company’s 2020-21 season will consist largely of streaming, virtual productions. Good Night, and Good Luck won’t hit the Chicago stage until “a future season,” according to Steppenwolf.
Written by playwright Matt Charman based on the George Clooney-Grant Heslov screenplay for the Oscar-nominated film about the battle between Sen. Joseph McCarthy and TV journalist Edward R. Murrow, Good Night, and Good Luck had been set to begin performances in December. The play was to be directed by Anna D. Shapiro (The Minutes), with Steppenwolf’s Ian Barford leading the cast.

One thing we’ve definitely learned from the Snyder Cut trailer is that those that were clambering for it are probably wetting themselves with excitement right now since the whole idea of the Snyder Cut was to make the Justice Leauge look a lot more awesome than it ended up being in the theater, and at this point, it does admittedly. But, and maybe this is just the cynicism talking, it almost feels as though we’re being given a little Too much since to be fair, the new look for Steppenwolf, the appearance of Darkseid, and the fact that the heroes

Zack Snyder debuted the first trailer for his version of Justice League on Saturday (Aug. 22) during the online DC FanDome event.
A high level of anticipation has surrounded the project ever since it was officially announced as coming to HBO Max next year, with Snyder himself dropping plenty of hints about what his four-hour cut of the film — which was initially rewritten, reshot and completed by Joss Whedon after Snyder stepped away to deal with a family tragedy — would look like.
As fans have hoped, the trailer gives us our first brief look at the DC big bad Darkseid — who would have been revealed as the cosmic supervillain pulling the strings had Snyder finished the film the first time around — as well as a redesigned Steppenwolf (the chief villain of the Whedon-altered theatrical version) and Darkseid’s other principal henchman, the master torturer DeSaad.

Today at DC Fandome, Zack Snyder confirmed what had been leaking out there: His new cut of Justice League will be available in four separate one-hour installments on HBO Max. “We’ll find a way of bundling it all together at the end,” said the filmmaker, who also promised overseas fans, who don’t have the streaming service in their country “we’ll find a way for you to see it.”
The trailer for Snyder Cut leaked online earlier today and was pulled. The trailer reveals a redesigned Steppenwolf, and a shot of Darkseid, who Snyder is restoring at the film’s main villain, which was his original intention. Snyder also promised more Cyborg and Flash in his version.

After months of speculation, it was finally confirmed that Ben Affleck would be returning to the Dceu to play Batman in The Flash, and following the big reveal of the Snyder Cut of Justice League, Henry Cavill extending his contract to continue being the franchise’s Superman and Michael Keaton set to reprise the role of Bruce Wayne for the first time in nearly three decades, you’d get the impression that there was nothing but good news coming out of Warner Bros.’ superhero series.
However, it turns out that Joss Whedon’s involvement in Justice League was a lot more troublesome than just churning out a major critical and commercial disappointment that led to fans destroying their copies of the movie. After Cyborg actor Ray Fisher publicly called the filmmaker out over his behavior on set during the extensive reshoots, a string of former collaborators have now come forward...

WarnerMedia’s chief executive Jason Kilar has recently discussed one important advantage that their streaming service HBO Max has over industry leader Netflix.
While the latter’s huge success in the field is what compelled other companies to follow suit in the first place, competitors like Disney+, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max are currently doing their best to give Netflix a fight. This has especially become apparent amid the Covid-19 pandemic. With people staying indoors and turning to on-demand services for entertainment, the value of streaming platforms is steadily increasing. But with the numbers alone, Netflix currently occupies the throne.
After all, they have the biggest and most immersive library of films, TV shows, and documentaries out there. Not to mention that their originals have been globally recognized. But Kilar doesn’t seem to think that that’s the case. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, here’s what he...

Even the most hardcore Dceu fan is likely to admit that Justice League movie villain Steppenwolf was something of a disappointment. Despite having the pedigree of being created by the legendary Jack Kirby, the big screen Steppenwolf resembled a washed out video game boss, stripped of any/all notable motivation in favor of his quest to collect Mother Boxes and…um…make bad things happen on Earth.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Steppenwolf was a victim of the troubled production of Justice League, which saw director Zack Snyder leave the project after a personal tragedy, and replaced by Joss Whedon, who stewarded massive reshoots of the project as Warner Bros. worked their way through the backlash against Snyder’s previous Dceu effort Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Perhaps there was a more layered, interesting villain awaiting fans in Snyder’s original vision for Steppenwolf.

Before Joss Whedon took over Justice League in 2017, Darkseid was supposed to be the main villain in the movie. The director ultimately decided to scrap this idea though and center the story around Steppenwolf, but since the Snyder Cut will bring back all those plot points, we’re excited to see the heroes go toe-to-toe with one of DC’s most iconic villains.
After years of campaigning, we’re finally going to see the long-anticipated Snyder Cut on HBO Max next year. The movie will supposedly incorporate all the elements that Zack Snyder initially envisioned for his version of the pic, too. What’s more, it’ll run for over three and a half hours. That’s plenty of time for the director to redeem the convoluted and messy theatrical cut. After all, one of the things that absolutely ruined the movie for fans was the rushed pacing.

There are a huge number of flaws in the theatrical edition of Justice League, which isn’t surprising when the movie is clearly the result of two very different takes on the material being awkwardly stitched together in post-production, but one of the worst aspects of the Dceu’s all-star ensemble is Steppenwolf.
The character is widely regarded as one of the most embarrassing villains that the comic book genre has ever seen, and continued the franchise’s unwanted streak of poorly-realized CGI creations acting as the big bad that also affected Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, with Darkseid’s minion offering little in the way of threat or menace to the combined might of the Justice League.
Zack Snyder might not be getting paid for finishing his original vision, but the filmmaker clearly knows what the fans want, having already teased Darkseid in the Snyder Cut’s initial trailer.

We’ve hardly even seen much of Zack Snyder’s Justice League yet, but it’s already better than the version released in cinemas back in 2017. At least, that’s according to the one and only Darkseid himself.
Today, Snyder dropped our first look at a redesigned Steppenwolf online, which joins a previous clip the filmmaker has shared as pretty much all we’ve laid eyes on of the Snyder Cut to date. But that’s enough for star Ray Porter to declare that it’s already better than what Joss Whedon came up with for the theatrical edit.
Porter, whose uber-villain was not featured at all in the Whedon cut, took to Twitter today following Snyder’s post to praise what we’ve seen of his movie so far, saying:
“A 30 second video and a low res still. Already better than the entirety of that “other” version. F**k the trolls.

With Hollywood’s reboot/remake epoch showing no signs of slowing down, and the buzz surrounding Blumhouse’s recent Halloween sequel/reboot, it appears that the Candyman’s cinematic rebirth is nigh.
Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions have conjured a new Candyman manifestation. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directed the film off a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The film is a “spiritual sequel” that “returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.”
The project arose after the rights—originally held by the now-defunct PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and distributed by Tri-Star—recently became available. MGM will produce with Monkeypaw, with Universal Pictures set to distribute.

The theatrical release of Justice League rightly came under criticism for featuring one of the worst villains in the history of comic book movies thanks to Steppenwolf, but let’s not forget that Suicide Squad also boasted two antagonists that were just as bad. Both the awfully-rendered Incubus and Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress did a movie that was already butchered by studio interference absolutely no favors, and only made the troubled production zero-for-three for bad guys if Jared Leto’s Joker is also taken into account.
Director David Ayer has been frequently talking up his original vision for the antihero-led adaptation lately, perhaps in an attempt to drum up the sort of publicity and online campaigning that led to the Snyder Cut becoming a reality, and from what we’ve heard, it might eventually happen should the re-cut HBO Max exclusive turn out to be a massive success.

The politically active students at Kent State had an uneasy relationship with the conservative townspeople of Kent, and they clashed many times in the weeks leading up to the shooting.

There are many things wrong with the theatrical cut of Justice League. One of those is that, given the pantheon of DC supervillains out there, Steppenwolf was a weak choice of antagonist for the first ever time the League united on screen. For one thing, the character’s design falls short of some of the more iconic CG movie bad guys, but here’s a look at how Darkseid’s general could have appeared in an earlier version of the film.
Some concept footage for an initial Steppenwolf design has hit the web, and you can take a look at a screenshot of it in the gallery below. As you can see, it’s a whole lot more monstrous and intimidating than the one in the eventual movie, sporting a different version of his antlered helmet, a less visible, scarier face and a more ornate armor, covered in spikes. Justice League had a lot of problems, though one of the most obvious was its dull villain Steppenwolf. Ciarán Hinds did his best, but the character was unthreatening, the CGI was extremely wobbly and he just didn’t have any qualities that made him stand out. His flaws became especially apparent when Avengers: Infinity War hit cinemas in 2018, with Josh Brolin’s Thanos doing the whole CGI alien space conqueror thing right.
But it didn’t have to be this way. Since the film was released, we’ve seen evidence that Steppenwolf’s design was radically changed midway through production. Apparently, Warner Bros. executives were nervous that Zack Snyder’s original design was too scary, so requested that the character be redesigned late in the process. Not only is the initial look much cooler than what we what got, but the switch is probably the reason why the finished CGI didn’t look so good.

There can be no doubt about the fact that fandoms have a lot of passion poured into them. Sometimes, this results in unpleasant outcomes. Other times, fans can put out some pretty amazing stuff. For instance, a DC Comics fan has put out a trailer concept for a hypothetical Justice League follow-up, which puts a huge emphasis on the character called Darkseid. Why Are People Expecting Darkseid For Justice League 2? On the whole, the choice of Darkseid isn’t a huge leap for the fan. After all, Justice League featured Steppenwolf as its main antagonist. Since Steppenwolf is one of

Stage and screen acting legend Max Von Sydow, who starred in The Seventh Seal and appeared in The Exorcist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Flash Gordon, and Game of Thrones, died on March 8 at the age of 90, according to Variety.
“It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow,” his wife, the producer Catherine Brelet, said in a statement.
Von Sydow made his Hollywood debut as Jesus in the 1965 Biblical epic The Greatest Story Ever Told. This gave him the authority to observe “if Jesus were alive today and saw what they are saying in his name, he would never stop throwing up” in Woody Allen’s 1986 film Hannah and Her Sisters. Von Sydow had the power to compel Satan as Father Merrin in William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic The Exorcist and Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), directed by John Boorman.
