Ian Gelder, a British actor known for his role as Kevan Lannister in “Game of Thrones,” died Monday of complications from bile duct cancer. He was 74.
Gelder’s partner, Ben Daniels, confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” Daniels wrote. “Ian was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December and yesterday he passed at 13.07. I’d stopped all work to be his carer but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”
Gelder played the younger brother of Lord Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) in 12 episodes of the HBO series “Game of Thrones.” He appeared in multiple television series, including “Doctor Who,” “Snatch,” “Fifteen-Love,” “Casualty,” “Father Brown,” “The Bill,” “Edward the King,...

With the whole world still seemingly in the grip of clown-mania, it’s doubly difficult for a movie to make a real impact at the moment. With Victoria & Albert however, we may have something that is powerful enough to step out of the shadows that It has created in cinematic circles this month.
The sequel to 1997’s Mrs. Brown, and based on the book of the same name as well as real-life events, Judie Dench reprises her role as Queen Victoria, now in her dotage at the age of 81. This second story echoes the sentiments of its predecessor, in that a servant finds favour with the ruler of the largest empire that the world has ever seen. Although Ali Fazal‘s Abdul Karim is a completely different character to the irreverent Scotsman portrayed by Billy Connolly in Mrs. Brown, the similarities are striking.

Prince Charles just made history.
On Sunday, he passed a landmark milestone to become the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history, with 59 years, one month and 15 days on the job.
Charles, 68, was invested as the Prince of Wales by his mother Queen Elizabeth in 1969 at Caernarfon Castle when he was 20 years old. The record was previously held by his ancestor, Edward VII, son of another long-reigning monarch — Queen Victoria — who became King on January 22, 1901.
The two men hit their records due to similar circumstances. Edward VII (or Bertie as he was known before he chose his honorific name as King...

Netflix's pricy royal family drama The Crown has stand-out performances from John Lithgow and Matt Smith, but lacks story...
Warning: contains spoilers.
The great cliche about the British is that we’re a stoic lot; emotionally reserved and only ever prone to bouts of ‘hayfever’ when Bambi’s mum dies.
Netflix’s £100m production of The Crown tries to buck this trope with a ten-part series dramatising the personal and political events surrounding the first decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign from 1952.
One part Downton Abbey, one part House Of Cards (the original of course), The Crown never quite decides if it wants to commit itself to a political drama or total supposition about the inner workings of the Court of St James's.
Written by Peter Morgan, the identity struggle at the heart of the series is not hard to explain. Morgan made his name as...

The prince paid tribute to 650 officers and staff who have died while working for the Metropolitan Police.

Appropriately enough for this time of year, Acorn Media’s latest batch of DVD releases includes The Fall. It’s a Belfast based psychological crime drama in which Dsi Stella Gibson attempts to hunt down a sadistic serial killer who seems to delight in deviousness. Somewhat unusually for a crime drama, the killer is identified fairly early on as Paul Spector. Thereafter, Spector and Gibson become embroiled in a game of cat and mouse that lasts through five suspensful episodes. The relationship between Spector and Gibson is similar to the one involving Hannibal Lector and Clarice except for the fact that Lector was banged up while Spector is on the loose.
X-Files actress Gillian Anderson takes on the role of Gibson and she seems quite at home on British TV these days having enjoyed success in recent hits such as Great Expectations. Her nemesis is the rather less...

Prince Charles was just 3 years old when he became first in line to the British throne. And on Thursday, the Prince of Wales earned a potentially dubious distinction: He would be the oldest British monarch ever crowned. According to The Telegraph, the new grandfather just surpassed the previous record holder, William IV, who became king in 1830 at the age of 64 years, 10 months and five days. (The oldest-ever heir to the throne, Sophia of Hanover, died in 1714 at age 83 before ever becoming monarch.) The prince is already the longest-serving heir apparent (he surpassed Edward VII, who was 59 when he succeeded Queen Victoria...

The comedian and Family Fortunes alumnus on his telly-watching habits
Unmissable show?
Pointless. It's the best quiz show on TV. The relationship between Richard Osman and Alexander Armstrong is really warm and effortless. It's one of those gameshows that you have to play along with. Whenever I can, I'll always watch Coronation Street. I still love the fact that they've got really good dramatic stories alongside what I still think is consistently the best comedy writing on British television.
Box set?
Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David is hysterical. He speaks for us all; the kind of things you want to get away with saying sometimes. I'm absolutely obsessed with Breaking Bad. It is as addictive as anything I've ever watched. I keep going back to The Sopranos. I think it's the best televison that I've ever seen. It got really surreal. The dream sequences are brilliant. I was really gutted when James Gandolfini died.

The Duchess of Cambridge is taking it easy with her pregnancy, and opted out of skiing on March 3 with husband Prince William while visiting the Swiss Alps for a wedding. The mom-t0-be took a walk around the Arosa resort while her hubby hit the slopes.
Just three months after leaving Kim Edward VII hospital after being treated for hyperemesis gravidarum, Kate Middleton is still putting her health first and skipped out on skiing in the Swiss Alps while she was in town for polo player Mark Tomlinson’s wedding to Olympic dressage rider Laura Bechtolsheimer.
As the gorgeous mom-to-be took a walk around the luxurious Arosa resort in Switzerland (accompanied by three bodyguards, of course), her husband Prince William, his brother Prince Harry and some friends hit the slopes for some fresh powder on another part of the resort.

In a tearful TV interview today, Australian radio DJs Michael Christian and Mel Greig expressed their regret for a prank that may have played a role in the suicide of a nurse at the hospital that treated the pregnant Kate Middleton last week.
“There’s nothing that can make me feel worse than what I feel right now. And for what I feel for the family. We’re so sorry that this has happened to them,” Greig told Today Tonight, when asked whether she felt like the object of a witch hunt after the apparent suicide of Jacintha Saldanha, 46, the nurse working as a receptionist who put the DJs’ call through to the nurse treating the Duchess of Cambridge.
While seeming very sorry for the aftermath of the prank — in which they called Edward VII Hospital pretending to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles — the 2Day FM hosts said they...

Is the man who would be king tired of waiting his turn? Speculation reigned in Great Britain this weekend after Prince Charles spoke of his "impatience" at an event to promote his 64th birthday at Dumfries House, a once-stately residence that the royal has worked to rehabilitate and save for his country. "Impatient? Me? What a thing to suggest! Yes, of course I am," joked the Prince who passed his great-great grandfather Edward VII as the longest-waiting heir in his nation's history. "I'll run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if I'm not careful." His mother, Queen Elizabeth,...

This restrained portrayal of Queen Victoria's relationship with her gallant gillie puts the Victorian gossips to shame
Mrs Brown (1997)
Director: John Madden
Entertainment grade: B
History grade: B+
Queen Victoria was widowed in 1861. Four years after Prince Albert's death, she became attached to her gillie, John Brown.
Taste
John Brown (Billy Connolly) joins Victoria's staff at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, then moves with her to Balmoral in Scotland. The film invents some Upstairs Downstairs drama, but sticks approximately to the facts. The only conspicuous error is that the Balmoral sets are far too tasteful. Balmoral, like Osborne, was bought and decorated by Victoria and Albert as a couple, and its interiors were famously hideous. All the wood was painted dark ginger, fake thistles abounded, and anything that stayed still long enough was covered in violently clashing tartans – including curtains, carpets, furniture, linoleum and small children.

There have been several live-action translations of Terry Pratchett's Discworld stories so far, and they've really been quite good, but none of them have really captured the essence of the affair like Going Postal. They have largely served as a very good time for those who are already massive fans, but the relation of the splendor has been largely left to the fact that you already read the book in question, and you bring the lion's share of the brilliance with you.
That's still true to some extent here, but it's a much different game. Much of the credit goes to a different style of screenplay translation, focusing more on how to deliver through the medium, as opposed to just making sure the key lines show up. Moreover, the acting, while solid enough in other efforts, including a good turn by Sean Astin, is at a much better level here.

The nuptials of Prince William and Miss Kate Middleton only go to show that marriage between a royal and a commoner in the family of the British crown is anything but novel. We have the recent example of Prince Edward and the publicist Sophie Rhys-Jones; and half a century earlier, the marriage of the abdicated King Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson. But Britain’s royal annals all but run amok with earlier morganatic matches. Fanciers of such couplings will not soon forget that in 1920, for example, the late Edward VII’s bastard son Chip announced his intention to wed not just a soubrette but the entire chorus line of London’s West End musicale “Chu Chin Chow,” and that he was converting to Mormonism for that specific purpose, removing to Salt Lake City, and fashioning himself the Duke of Utah. An entire Court Chamber Extraordinary later had to be convened,...

Like most British dramas about the monarchy, The King's Speech skates over the less savoury aspects of royal history
The King's Speech is another addition to the royal family's filmography, a vast body of work that has played an underappreciated but insidious role in maintaining support for the monarchy.
The royal family – always the worst judges of their own self-interest – initially discouraged the production of dramatisations of themselves by making their displeasure known to those censors who vigorously policed stage and screen. In 1937 the lord chamberlain even issued a formal ban on the portrayal of sovereigns on the stage until a century after their accession. This was undoubtedly meant to prevent dramatists writing about the recently abdicated Edward VIII. It did, however, mean that depictions of Queen Victoria could be shown on stage for the first time, as she came to the throne in 1837. Prior to that, even harmless dramas...

With Colin Firth playing a royal with a stutter, The King's Speech is certain for Oscar magic, but Andrew Roberts says it gets the story all wrong and is simply bad history.
The buzzy new movie, The King's Speech, is an affectionate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II's parents, Bertie, the Duke of York (later King George VI) and Elizabeth the Duchess of York (later the Queen Mother), told through the prism of the King's overcoming of his stammer. Starring Colin Firth as the king, Helena Bonham Carter as the queen, and Geoffrey Rush as the king's Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue, it also boasts a cast that includes Derek Jacobi, Michael Gambon, Timothy Spall, and Anthony Andrews. Yet before it is accepted as an accurate historical record of what happened to the Royal Family between 1925 and 1939, viewers should know of the very many glaring and egregious inaccuracies and tired...

Having had the TV hit of the summer with Sherlock, Mark Gatiss is now bringing cult horror to the masses – and putting Edwardians on the moon. Stuart Jeffries meets a shooting star
'When I was a boy," says Mark Gatiss, "I wanted to be a whiskery man in a white coat saying, 'Look, it's a pterodactyl!'" He elaborates, mentioning one of his film heroes, who died earlier this year: "I wanted to be Lionel Jeffries in an Edwardian-set family fantasy film."
Gatiss, now 43, has his wish. He's playing Edwardian inventor Joseph Cavor in his own defiantly kidultish adaptation of Hg Wells's 1901 novel The First Men in the Moon. Cavor is white-coated, facially hirsute and occasionally ditsy. Just before they set off for the moon, fellow astronaut Arnold Bedford inquires: "I say, Cavor, we will be able to get back, won't we?"
"I don't see why not," says Cavor vaguely.

‘Sator’ From The Tailor and Cutter forum takes a look at the superior costume design of Edwardian set British classic, Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949).
Kind Hearts and Coronets is a delicious Ealing black comedy starring Dennis Price as Louis Mazzini, distant heir to a dukedom, but with eight members of the D’Ascoyne family standing in his way. He vows to avenge the premature death of his beloved mother who dies in poverty after being ostracised by her family for marrying below her station, after eloping with an Italian opera singer. Mazzini sets out to murder his way to the Dukedom of Chalfont, with each of his victims played to hilarious effect by Alec Guinness – even Lady Agatha D’Ascoyne.
This is a splendid film in its own right, shot in a sumptuous black and white. However, what interests us today is the extraordinary care taken in recreating Edwardian dress.

I’ve been a “For King and Country” monarchist since I was little, so you can imagine how pleased I was when I read there would be another biopic, especially one on the present Queen’s, Elizabeth II, father George VI. Tom Hooper’s The King’S Speech will have it’s North American premiere at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival taking place from September 9 to 19. Click here to listen King George VI’s broadcast speech to the British Empire from Buckingham Palace on September 3rd, 1939.
The King’S Speech will make a fine addition to the wealth of cinema and tv miniseries from the United Kingdom on the British Monarchy consisting of The Lion In Winter, & Richard III through The Private Life Of Henry VIII, Elizabeth, & The Madness Of King George and finally Young Victoria, Mrs. Brown, Edward The King, Edward and Mrs Simpson, and The Queen.

As preface to this week’s Double Feature film review of The Young Victoria with Maggie from The Costumer’s Guide, here is a little chat we had about the clothes, hair, jewellery, even underwear from the movie.
Chris, Clothes on Film: So, what did you think of the The Young Victoria? My opinions changed slightly from at the cinema. I liked it more actually.
Maggie, The Costumer’s Guide: I loved it when I saw it in the theatre – it almost felt too short, it went by so quickly. Watching it again last night I enjoyed it just as much! I actually have very few complaints, except for Albert getting shot, which of course, didn’t happen. I get why they did it, but the rest of the movie feels closer to real than that huge, glaring “never happened” moment did.
Chris: I agree about Albert getting shot, although...

Hundreds of photographs showing the British royal family since 1842 went online today (16.04.10). The extensive archive of pictures, which come from a loyal royal newspaper - the Illustrated London News, published from 1842 until 2003 - has been digitised and can now be viewed on the internet by academics researching the monarchy. The newspaper, which pioneered the use of colour photography, covered Queen Victoria's fancy dress ball at Buckingham Palace in its first issue, as well as the wedding of the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Seth Cale, at Gale Cengage Learning - the publishers who plan to sell the online archive to universities and other institutions -said he was excited about...
