Better Than I Initially Expected
Uriah436 July 2019
This film begins with a talented but rather immature young man by the name of "Fang Meng Yeh" (Lun Hua) being introduced to the daughter of a wealthy nobleman who wishes to arrange her marriage to him. But rather than being flattered by this offer he rudely turns him down and leaves to get drunk with his friends. Not long after that he spies an attractive woman named "Chou Li Cheng" (Ti Ai) walking with her pretty maidservant "Li Tsu An" (Kai Kang) near his home and becomes determined to meet her at all costs. To his surprise she welcomes his flirtatious advances and in no time they become romantically involved. What he doesn't know at the time, however, is that there is much more to Chou Li Cheng than meets the eye and he soon comes face to face with the consequences of his brash behavior. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this film turned out to be a little better than I initially expected due in large part to the sinister plot and the manner in which Chou Li Cheng managed to turn the tables on the brash Fang Men Yeh. Likewise, I especially enjoyed the rather bizarre twist at the end. Be that as it may, while certainly dated to a degree, I found this to be worth the time spent and have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.

A wonderful ghostly tale.

I watched this around 1980 at the Star Cinema in Boston. I thought the story was strong and could possibly be done as a modern film.
