New Delhi, Sep 26 (Ians) One of Hindi films’ most talented and versatile actresses – and still going strong, the exquisite and enchanting Waheeda Rehman, who caps a remarkable stint with the prestigious Dadasahab Phalke Award, carved out a niche with confident renditions of unconventional roles, including some very bold for the era – and could have spelled doom to her career.
Starting with Telugu and Tamil films in 1955 before switching over to Hindi cinema the following year, she did the usual roles expected of Hindi film actresses but also went on to play a prostitute, a gangster’s moll, a nautanki actress, a woman who walks out of a marriage without regrets, et al – but with such innate grace that she has always been a byword for refined sensibility.

Because there are two screenplay categories at the Oscars — one for original scripts, and one for scripts adapted from other sources — they open the door for more films to be recognized and have often given us surprising and gratifying nominees that don’t show up in any other categories, including “Nightcrawler” (2014), “The Lobster” (2016), “20th Century Women” (2016), “The Big Sick” (2017), “Logan” (2017), and “Knives Out” (2019), to name a few in recent years. So before the Oscar nominations are announced on March 15, let’s consider some of the films that I think could land that lone screenplay nom.
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” — The comedy sequel by all means might not only be a writing nominee. Maria Bakalova remains a strong contender for her breakthrough performance as Borat’s daughter, and the film’s original song “Wuhan Flu” made the Oscars shortlist. But in case the outlandish satirical comedy is still too out-there for the academy in those categories,...

Eddie Vedder had never guested on The Howard Stern Show until Monday, but he made up for lost time by sitting for a three-hour interview from his house in Seattle.
It was a wide-ranging conversation that touched on everything from the new Pearl Jam record Gigaton to the earliest days of the band, the pressure he felt to record a follow-up to their breakthrough album Ten, his pre-fame days in San Diego, and his difficult teenage years where he learned that the man who raised him wasn’t his biological father.

Songwriter and producer Savan Kotecha is the man behind such hits such as Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” and “No Tears Left to Cry,” Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” and The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.” His music is about go global again this weekend with the release of Netflix’s “Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga,” for which Kotecha wrote all the original songs.

Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the former Confederacy, has been celebrated as a holiday by many black Americans since shortly after the historic events of June 19th, 1865. This year, with the movement to end racial injustice back in the news, a number of companies have taken steps to formally recognize Juneteenth. One of them is Bandcamp, the independent music platform, which is giving its revenue share from all sales made on June 19th to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in solidarity with protesters. That means any purchase...

Nigel Dick had already directed videos for Guns N’ Roses, Oasis, and many others by the time he met Britney Spears in 1998, but even the “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” clips couldn’t come close to matching the culture-shaking impact of “…Baby One More Time.”
Dick went on to helm the videos for “(You Drive Me) Crazy” and “Sometimes,” and when it came time for the all-important first single from Spears’ second album, Oops!… I Did It Again, she and her team turned to him again.

Rolling Stone rolled out its list of the 100 Greatest Debut Singles of All Time this week, and it was packed with beloved classics like “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones, “Maybelline” by Chuck Berry, “Anarchy in the U.K.” by the Sex Pistols, and “Love Me Do” by the Beatles. The Jackson 5 had the number two slot with “I Want You Back,” but it was Britney Spears who topped the entire thing with her classic “…Baby One More Time.”

Oops, it's been two decades since Britney Spears did it again. On May 16, the Holy Spearit celebrates a special anniversary, as it marks 20 years since the release of Oops!... I Did It Again, the uniquely punctuated second studio album of her career. The LP had big footsteps to follow in, as 1999's (similarly punctuated) ...Baby One More Time catapulted the young starlet to pop music superstardom practically overnight with hits like the iconic title track, "Sometimes" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy." But Oops! did the impossible, proving that, once in a while, lightning could strike twice. With smash hit singles like the equally iconic title track, "Lucky" and "Stronger,"...

It is agreed by all that Bollywood is lights, colour and music. It’s a little overacting, a little or sometimes a lot of dramatics, but most of all it sets itself apart by the power, emotionality and beauty conveyed in its music. For those who live for Bollywood’s songs, it is a privilege to have it in our lives: to know that any feeling can be expressed with just the right formation of tune, singers and lyrics. The tune is formulated by a composer, the singers perform based on instruction and style but it all wraps around the lyrics. A lyricist is a poet and in Bollywood he/she is given great powers to make even the most club beat song into a heartbreaker. And with the current state of the world, we have a chance to pause and look back on some of Bollywood’s greatest masters of this art,...

H.E.R. performed her new ballad “Sometimes,” produced by the R&b ace D’Mile, at the 62nd Grammy Awards on Sunday.
She was accompanied by four horn players and four string players; the extra instrumental muscle helped fill out the spare piano melody of “Sometimes.”
“I had a plan, I had it mapped out,” H.E.R. sang. “I knew where I was going when I left out.” During the bridge, the singer abandoned the piano to play a stirring, ornate guitar solo; she also played a few of...

The basic plot of “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is easy enough to describe. A 17-year-old girl named Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) winds up pregnant in a small Pennsylvania town. Prevented from seeking an abortion by the state’s parental consent laws, she takes off for New York City with her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder), where what they’d assumed would be a one-day procedure winds up proving considerably more complicated.
But that synopsis, and the polemical “issue movie” treatment it might suggest, hardly does justice to the surgically precise emotional calibration of writer-director Eliza Hittman’s exceptional film, which is both of a piece with, and a significant step forward from, her prior youth-in-crisis works “Beach Rats” and “It Felt Like Love.” At once dreamlike and ruthlessly naturalistic, steadily composed yet shot through with roiling currents of anxiety, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is a quietly devastating gem.

Two veterans star together for first time in 27 years.

Based on Saumya Joshi’s Gujarati-language play of the same name, the film revolves around a father-son relationship with Bachchan playing the 102-year-old father and Kapoor playing his sprightly 75-year-old son.
The film marks the first time in 27 years that the two stars have worked together after co-starring in Hindi-language classics such as Kabhie Kabhie, Naseeb and Ajooba. Shukla previously directed comedies All Is Well (2015) and Omg: Oh My God! (2012).

There is only one hero in Abhishek Kapoor’s massively disappointing and bogus adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. And it’s not Aditya Roy Kapoor. It’s Kashmir. The film, purported to be a romance between the bewitching Katrina Kaif and the besotted Aditya Roy Kapoor, romances just the Kashmir Valley. The rest is all mystery.
I recommend Fitoor be used to promote tourism in the Valley. As for Charles Dickens and Great Expectations, thankfully the author is not around to see how far his novel about forbidden love has been taken away from its roots.
Dickens’ title, as it turns out, proves prophetically ironic. You enter director Abhishek Kapoor’s snow-swept stunning world of stillness and turbulence, with a whole lot of expectations. You come away feeling cheated, betrayed and also angry for...
